Before anyone comments - this movie has about as much to do with Charles M. Schulz as Animatronixx with Goscinny and Uderzo. "Peanuts" is a German neologism for "piffle, barely anything". I believe it also used to be a common term in that sense in English, but fell out of use in the 70s.

It's inspired by the infamous Jürgen Schneider case. Subsequently the term "Peanuts" has become part of German popular culture, used to belittle loads of money as 'pocket change' in a sarcastic sense.

IMDB Trivia wrote The movie is based on the real life real-estate business man Jürgen Schneider, who invested in various buildings around Germany and got bankrupt. He also called 50 million marks "Peanuts", which is not only the title of the movie but also became the anti-word of the year 1994. It ruined the name of "Deutsche Bank". In 1995 Schneider was arrested and put to jail for 6 years and 9 months. The real Jürgen Schneider tried to prohibit the movie before the premiere due to the infringement of his personal rights. The court ruled against him since it was obvious for the audience that this is a satire and not a realistic recreation of the actual events.

Edit: There is an inaccuracy in the IMDB Trivia comment above which I hadn't noticed so far: It wasn't Jürgen Schneider who referred to the great sum as 'Peanuts' - Hilmar Kopper, Deutsche Bank AG spokesperson, did so at a press conference, trying to play down the great loss Deutsche Bank just had experienced in the clumsiest way possible. He had to deal with the echo of his words for the rest of his life and even his death in late 2021 wasn't publicly announced without the explanation 'the man who once said...'
