OK, enough with the [*] vehicles for this movie. There are plenty of the sort, I won't exhaust the source.

So, Yôji Yamada's

written with Akira Miyazaki.

A tragedy and a renaissance for a family of miners, leaving Kyushu and settling as farmers in Hokkaido. Most of the movie tells the trip between Nagasaki and Hokkaido. Soft spoken, very well acted by Chieko Baishô,

Hisashi Igawa (her husband) and Chishû Ryû (the grand father). Many moments of despair, and some happy times too, especially in the very end.

Documentary-like, through the trip, about Japan in 1970.

(Osaka World Fair.)

Trains, trains, trains:

(and boats too).

We stop and go in Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Osaka, Tokyo and finally east of Hokkaido. And the trip is worth the admission fee.

When I lived in Japan, it was in an Osaka suburb right near the Expo '70 fairgrounds. The Tower of The Sun is still there, and the grounds are now home to a massive botanical garden.
