This came from a VHS tape; had to do some color correction on all images. Still one of my favorite movies.

I found a Blu-ray rip online and was able to get better images; all finished.

Odd thing about the Blu-ray: images are wider than the VHS version but more cropped on top. For example:

Why is that odd? Have you forgotten what the TV sets looked like in the VHS era [Image: tv_smiley_14.gif]

The point is that the Blu-Ray transfer doesn't show the entire original frame.

The IMDB's technical specifications page for The Trap says that it was filmed in VistaVision, a widescreen process in which 35mm film ran through the camera horizontally. Wikipedia says:
Quote This gave a wider aspect ratio of 1.5:1 versus the conventional 1.37:1 Academy ratio, and a much larger image area. In order to satisfy all theaters with all screen sizes, VistaVision films were shot in such a way that they could be shown in one of three recommended aspect ratios: 1.66:1, 1.85:1 and 2.00:1.

So the television/VHS transfer shows the full height of the original frame but is cropped at the sides, while the Blu-Ray widescreen transfer is wider but crops the top and bottom.

Yes, that's open matte:
Quote Open matte is a filming technique that involves matting out the top and bottom of the film frame in the movie projector (known as a soft matte) for the widescreen theatrical release and then scanning the film without a matte (at Academy ratio) for a full screen home video release.
