Anything with a chassis that was big and cheap and nobody wanted, American cars would have been ideal especially if the steering wheel was on the wrong side, plus old Humbers, Ford V-8s, both American and British, Standard 20s, and old Daimlers with truck engines fitted in place of the sleeve valve units. Most of the cars shown above look American to my eyes, nobody wanted them as family cars because they couldn't afford the fuel consumption. I can remember only very few American cars on the roads here when I was a kid in the fifties, mostly used as taxis or converted into trucks or ambulances. We still don't buy American produced cars, they don't meet our needs for mostly the same reasons. Cars badged Chevrolet come from Korea, and there are a few Chrysler PT and 300s (horrible heaps) about but little else. In the early 60s, in a provincial town of about 10,000 people, there was one newish American car, a Ford Fairlane belonging to the owner of the coffee bar, and a prewar Packard 120 used as a taxi. -- Last edit: 2014-06-23 15:03:57
