DidierF ◊ 2014-10-10 06:23	Odd! Few hours ago, I watched then uploaded pics from Kurt Bernhardt's Carrefour made in Paris in 1938, and now I'm doing directed by Jack Conway. And it is the second remake of Carrefour! (The first was made in Britain in 1939, Dead Man's Shoes and has yet to be on IMCDb.) The action is kept to its original time and place, … and the characters are almost the same, the industrialist Charles Vanel being replaced by William Powell the diplomat, Jules Berry by Basil Rathbone, Suzy Prim by Claire Trevor, and the beautiful Tania Fédor by the equally beautiful Hedy Lamar who benefits of much an increase of screen presence and lines. The general noir mood looks the same, see for instance this shot of a fake Pont Neuf with a Peugeot 401 driven in the rainy night. There is some extraordinary attention given to motorized details, as we can see during one scene where Powell is buying a plane ticket, and we have the street across the window: all the cars are genuine French cars —here a KZ23 and a KZ11: But the story changes in the end, to reach a (bit over) 'positive' resolution. We're not in France, after all, but in Hollywood. Anyway, though no-one could challenge Charles Vanel for the main part, this remake is very valuable, and its copy very well preserved (we're not in France, after all, but in Hollywood).
