From Up on Poppy Hill is directed by Goro Miyazaki (son of famed director Hideo Miyazaki, who co-wrote the script) and takes place in Yokohama in the year 1963.

The trains are JNR 72 and 73 series operating on the Keihin-Tōhoku line. The earlier 63 series were converted to 79 series and integrated into the 72 and 73 series. The Keihin-Tōhoku line recieved light blue 103 series beginning in October 1965.
