In our license-plate-collector's forum we are wondering, why in in such a expensive movie the plates of the cars are such poor, worst made fakes.

Anyways, in Bond-movies the locations and many more details usually aren't original either. Why the Bond-movie-makers are provoking such an amount of goofs and real mistakes?

G-MANN UK

2010-06-02 10:23

It probably isn't anything to do with money, it's just the art departments of these movies aren't conscientious enough to make them totally authentic (they probably don't have a lot of time and think most viewers won't notice or care). Also, with the BMW 750iL in this film the space for the plate in the bumper is the wrong shape for a German plate (or a British one), it's more like the shape of a US plate, so they probably had to compromise. In Britain you can have square plates for grey imports and also motorbikes, does Germany do this?

about "background cars that need identifying" (I do not see the point of doing that if they are not listed), the last but one is the Citroën 2CV/Dyane (maybe the same one 2 pics before) that you deleted some time ago. Fourth one is a BMW E30, wasn't it listed previously? The white one (5th) is the Mitsubishi Colt that you deleted some time ago too :D

Blue car (3rd thumb in the car park set) is Peugeot 504.

Robi, I deleted the Mercedes W124 you added because in that shot it must appear for a fraction of a second (I know this chase scene pretty well) and it's hardly a rare car. It's probably the same car that's more visible here /vehicle_450437-BMW-7-E32-1987.html (next to the BMW E32)

What do you want - delete the BMW or list the Merc? At least the BMW was bit a rarity, being 25 years old at the time. Or shall we just let Robi list every car in that car park?

By the way, this may seem rather odd but I've put the Mitsubishi Colt back up: /vehicle_529560-Mitsubishi-Colt-C12.html

I'm sure someone else added the BMW E12 and E32 (must have been Robi), I just replaced the original pictures with DVD captures. What I don't really like is when people add extra background cars using crappy pics. What Robi should do is make HD captures (he said he had the James Bond set on Blu-Ray)

Where was the parking garage scene filmed? Or were there more filming locations? There is a strange mixture of US-spec cars and cars, which were available only in Europe. The plates doesn't say anything. All are terrible fakes.

G-MANN UK

2012-09-05 19:16

It was filmed in the multistorey car park at Brent Cross Shopping Centre, London. They must have brought in a load of LHD cars and made up those fake German plates for them.

Interesting (also in the 7th photo as well). Is it a late trim Karmann Ghia?? Unusual for UK and looks Californian-style alloys - Empi??

Ingo DE

2012-09-06 13:04

Late or latest? The bumper is not really identifyable. But it has the big indicators and the colour seems to be shantunggelb, so 1971 would be correct. The alloys maybe Empi, but the pic is too bad to take it as a fact.

I know it's very background but when you consider all the much more ordinary stuff that's background and still listed, like many of the cars in the car park chase (like that Mitsubishi Charisma that appears for less than a second in the film)

I'd guess the Ferrari and Maserati were deliberate insertions by the producers rather accidental coincidences, so seem worth pages to me (despite being very background).

G-MANN UK

2012-10-18 18:25

Yes, for those scenes they obviously wanted expensive cars, for the multistorey car park they probably just filled it with whatever they could find. And that Astra van got validated, the only real reason for adding that is the goof factor (car with UK plate in a scene that's supposed to be set in a German airport)

I have to give these filmmakers credit. They found quite a the haul of USA spec cars in England and around.

Gag Halfrunt UK

2012-10-18 23:49

They weren't looking for US spec cars, because there aren't any scenes set there. They needed left hand drive cars for the Hamburg car park scene (filmed in London) and some of the cars they found happened to be US spec models.

rtsbusman1997 US

[quote]In Britain you can have square plates for grey imports and also motorbikes, does Germany do this?[\quote]
Yes, it does. At least at the rear, e.g. the Volkswagen Beetle (the old one ;)) and the BMW Isetta were designed to hold almost square plates (340x200 mm instead of 520x110 mm. These plates are the obvoius choice for imported cars from the US. The problem with the plate of the BMW is that the lettering has been done in one line, while these plates were designed to have two lines ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Germany ). The inscription is correct in principle (in that the numbers have the right size compared to the letters) and you see what the designers wanted to show (yes, it IS a vehicle from Berlin), but what catches your eye first is the wrong letter arrangement. This could have been prevented by doing approx. 5 minutes of internet research. I don't know why the art department didn't invest that time - in this case, taking a US plate it and embossing or painting it correctly would definitely have done the job.
