BTW, there was no need to take a court order as both Rootes and Paykans came with an automatic self-destruct device from the factory which usually deployed after a couple of years, so there weren't any to be found- at least that's what I've heard...

The only car, officially sold here, which I can remember, was the Chrysler Sunbeam. Other, older Rootes-cars were sold here time-by-time, but the open question is, how official was the import, and for what models. Your banter worried me so much, that the first thing, I've done this morning was, to check the list of all German classic car clubs. The only German club for any Rootes-car is the Sunbeam-Club: http://sunbeamtreffen.oyla18.de/cgi-bin/hpm_homepage.cgi That's all. A time ago there was a story about the only Humber Sceptre, which still exists in Germany. It was one of the very few, sold here as new cars. About the importer I haven't found any detail-informations until now. @Raul1983: Could you please check the "auto katalog"-issues from the early-70ies, I've sent to you two years ago, about comments to Rootes-cars? Even if you cannot understand German, the clear hint are the price in the short descriptions. If they are in D-Mark and not in GBP, it means, that there was at least a calculation for the German market. Thanks in advance!

No idea about late 40s and 50s but there may have been sales - UK was exporting wherever it could and had no reason to avoid D in those days, and we have some odd Minxes in D situations which we can't fully resolve. First Chrysler link was 1964, with full buy-out in 67. - several of the cars shown in the Sunbeam Club link are RHD, so modern collector imports (shows there are some Germans who appreciate fine cars ). Some nice cars in that link BTW - a Sunbeam Venezia, 2 Harrington Alpines etc. And a Hillman Super Imp. Maybe the club is an umbrella which mops up other Rootes strays? - paykanhunter has found a few German language brochures for various Sunbeam-badged Arrows. So far we've assumed Austrian or German-speaking parts of CH, but that's not watertight - seems there were Imp sales in D in early 66 as Hillman (before Sunbeam rebranding). 2 references found - one in a simple list of Imp export markets in 66; the second is a works-arranged trip made in an Imp Deluxe about March 66 with a crew of RAF drivers to visit 15 countries in 55 hours (repeating an earlier run in a Humber Super Snipe which took 90 hours). A Rootes internal briefing memo lists several stopping points to enable dealer participation with press coverage opportunities - these are: Hanover, Cologne, Aachen, Liege, Luxemburg, Metz, Nancy, Basle, Zurich, St. Moritz, Milan, Monte Carlo, Spain (from Madrid), Andorra (from Madrid). So maybe there was a small trickle of Rootes availability after all. But still agreed that this was not common - if all that trawling books and websites can produce is this sort of low-level occasional clues, then it was never a big effort. If I had to nominate the most likely cars to offer something different in a crowded market such as D it would probably be the Sunbeam Alpine and Tiger.

Until now I wasn't successful. When I think about it, I must say, that the last Rootes-car with a German plate, I definite can remember seeing by myself, was the mentioned Humber Sceptre. It was offered for sale on the Veterama in Mannheim, a few months after the story was issued. But this must have been minimum 3 or 4 years ago...

The Canadian ambassador drives a W116 280 SE, Ben Affleck's character rides in a Peugeot 504 taxi and there is a Mercedes-Benz Unimog in the same scene as the AMC Matador. There were plenty of US background vehicles which distracted me from the movie... my girl was getting irritated that I kept yelping at these classics! (I/We have just bought a 1976 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 400).

The author thinks that Argo was really filmed in Iran and so says that the car was probably made in Turkey. In fact, none of the film was made in Iran (for obvious political reasons that are themselves part of the film's story). The Tehran street scenes were filmed in Istanbul.
