You raise a point that asks a thousand questions. I have always considered the words “foreigners” and “foreign” as bearing the baggage of being a faint insult. When my very well worn ten year old beetle started to jump out of third gear, Dad said “what do you expect, it’s foreign”, possibly remembering the Traction Avant he bought which used to boil on long journeys, and lost a wheel once due to stripped threads on the studs. He never bought another car for his use that hadn’t come from Cowley, Longbridge or Coventry from then onwards. I don’t know what he would have said about Mum’s last car, a Hyundai Lantra!
