Well let me ask: what do you mean by origin - where its made, where the owner is, where the company started or what?

I agree that its nice to have a country flag. However, it can be confusing and inaccurate given the multi-country origins of many current autos. For example, most new toyotas sold in american are actually made in america but the parent company is japanese. Recent chryslers were made in america but the parent company was german, what origin would you give to recent chrysler be be consistent with recent american toyotas???

My point is: I don't really mind the country of origin flag but it raises issues that are hard to settle consistently and may be inaccurate. Sorry to be long winded but inaccuracy on this site really bugs me.

I think we should entirely scrap the origin information. It can get too confusing and its not really necessary to have it here because there are many other sources of that information on the internet. Wikipedia for example. If its a toyota, for example, is it really necessary for us to try to determine where it was conceived, designed and made by looking at a picture. We have all we can do just by identifying cars as to year, make and model. Lets leave it at that and not try to be experts on all aspects of car manufacture.

Made for Movie Mercedes-Benz SSK based on AC Ace chassis
Monte Carlo or Bust! (1969)
I ojbect to this damn thing being listed as AC Cobra. Such a listing makes us look like a bunch of idiots. It should probably be 'made for movie'. Extra information that we are SURE of could be included - chassis, look alike, replica, etc.

I don't mind listing highly modified cars according to the original body/chassis providing they are still somewhat recognizable but this listing is just ridiculous.

Even the current listing is problematical because there was no AC Cobra Chassis. The chassis was AC. The completed car was Shelby American Cobra. I know people call them AC Cobras but as a matter of fact there was ofically no such thing.

If we insist on going this route then there are a lot of dune buggies that will have to be listed as type 1 VW - think about it.

American Graffiti (1973)
About car speed: do the math

If the engine is limited to 6000 RPM and the tires are 2 ft. in diameter and other factors (rolling resistance and wind drag)are ignored:
a final gear ratio of 3.3:1 will result in a top speed of 130 MPH - typical of 1950's touring car.
a final gear ratio of 4.11:1 will result in a top speed of 104 MPH - typical of 1950's muscle car set up for drag racing.

Of course, in order to reach those speeds you have to have sufficient horsepower to overcome the "other factors" which are considerable at high speed. The huge 1950's tanks with their bias ply tires, large frontal area, generally square shape and chrome geegaws hung over them suffered badly from the "other factors".

Most 1950's muscle cars could barely top 100 MPH and were limited by top engine RPM - they had plenty of HP.
Most 1950's 'regular' cars could do 110 to 115 MPH and were generally limited by the "other factors": they had less HP.

Bottom line is that muscle cars were specifically designed to accelerate rapidly. They were not designed to have (and did not have) a high top speed.

Modern cars with 5 or 6 speed transmissions, small frontal area, radial tires and sleek aerodynamic design can generally perform as well as the 1950's cars both in acceleration and top speed, plus they handle much better. I will say however that modern cars are not nearly as attractive or as fun as the old ones.

CMC Gazelle Mercedes-Benz SSK Replica
P.I. Blues (2003)
If it will help people we can include Mercedes in the make but unlike most other replicas this car is not a good copy. It looks somewhat like a 1929 Mercedes SSK. You have to look pretry hard to distinguish some replicas (especially Cobra replicas) but not this beast. One brief look reveals it to be a modern car. I don't even know why its called a replica because it doesn't resemble an SSK much more than the early Excaliburs do - but I guess I am being to critical again.

1939 Sunbeam-Talbot Two litre
The Clouded Yellow (1951)
Agree with 2491tj as to the ID. But I get confused regarding the early cars. The make started as Swallow Sidecars, then was changed to SS Cars Ltd and finally to Jaguar. I think some of the earlier ones (like the SS 100 and maybe this one) used Jaguar as the model name and not the make name. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of Jaguar cars could give accurate dates for the various make and model names used by this company. 2007-07-11 18:43
