| Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip (2003) |
![]() This documentary tells the story of Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, who, in the spring of 1903, took a $50 ($1178.62 in 2009 dollars) wager to see if he could cross the entire United States by automobile within 90 days. It would be the first transcontinental trip of its kind. With him on his journey was young mechanic and driver Sewall K. Crocker and a bulldog named Bud. The car chosen for the trip was a slightly used 1903 Winton Touring Car (nicknamed "Vermont" after his home state), which was the most powerful car at the time, with 20 hp and a top speed of 30 mph. It cost him $3,000, which is about $70,000 in 2009 dollars! Despite many break downs and mechanical problems along the way, they successfully arrived in New York City in 63 days. Today, that same trip can be made in less than a week. More info here- http://www.pbs.org/horatio/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Nelson_Jackson |

| 1771 Cugnot Fardier The World of Heavy Haulage (2004) |
Wow, to think that this was made during the American Revolution and even years before the war itself! According to Wikipedia, a steam powered vehicle was built by the Chinese about a century before Cugnot did! Also, many steam carriages were built in England starting in the early 1830s until 1865, when a law was passed that required someone to walk in front of a carriage and warn people by waving a red flag (this was later repealed in 1896). Needless to say, these early vehicles were quite dangerous, since they required high temperatures to produce steam. One of the first "cars" built in the Unites States was the Roper Steam Carriage in 1865, which was the same year the Civil War ended! Yep, I am a history nut. ![]() |

| 1964 Buick Skylark [4367] My Cousin Vinny (1992) |
Mona Lisa Vito: The car that made these two, equal-length tire marks had positraction. You can't make those marks without positraction, which was not available on the '64 Buick Skylark! Vinny Gambini: And why not? What is positraction? Mona Lisa Vito: It's a limited slip differential which distributes power equally to both the right and left tires. The '64 Skylark had a regular differential, which, anyone who's been stuck in the mud in Alabama knows, you step on the gas, one tire spins, the other tire does nothing. [the jury members nod, with murmurs of "yes," "that's right," etc] Vinny Gambini: Is that it? Mona Lisa Vito: No, there's more! You see? When the left tire mark goes up on the curb and the right tire mark stays flat and even? Well, the '64 Skylark had a solid rear axle, so when the left tire would go up on the curb, the right tire would tilt out and ride along its edge. But that didn't happen here. The tire mark stayed flat and even. This car had an independent rear suspension. Now, in the '60's, there were only two other cars made in America that had positraction, and independent rear suspension, and enough power to make these marks. One was the Corvette, which could never be confused with the Buick Skylark. The other had the same body length, height, width, weight, wheel base, and wheel track as the '64 Skylark, and that was the 1963 Pontiac Tempest. Vinny Gambini: And because both cars were made by GM, were both cars available in metallic mint green paint? Mona Lisa Vito: They were! Vinny Gambini: Thank you, Ms. Vito. No more questions. Thank you very, very much. [kissing her hands] Vinny Gambini: You've been a lovely, lovely witness. |
