| UMM Alter Mona Lisa (1986) |
Gaiseric ![]() | Well I'm sorry to say this, as I am a great UMM fan (I had two Alter Turbo) and my father worked at the UMM company, but in the scene the off-road vehicle that is shown there is not an UMM. It is a long-wheelbased French-made Cournil 4x4. UMM never manufactured the long-wheelbased version of the French engineered Cournil, although it acquired the rights to build so. UMM only built a short-wheelbase of the Cournil model known as the UMM 4x4 Cournil Randoneur (only 4 or 5 were built making it one of the rarest UMM ever made) and a long-wheelbase version of the Alter after 1989. The UMM company started it's off-road manufacture activities in 1979, as it bought the right to build the Cournil off-road vehicle in Portugal. So many Cournil 4x4 and UMM 4x4 Cournil share the same design and specifications. Although many UMM exist in the UK, as right-hand drive versions were built and exported. There are even UMM owner clubs there. UMMs are not rare in Portugal and they last as much as a Land Rover Defender (which is a spectacular car too). They're primary function was to work, be tough and simple, reliable and have a virtually undestructable chassis, some people say that UMM are crap and unreliable because they don't usally use the car, they destroy them in off-road, against physics and stupid careless owners there are no unbeatable cars. Just rembember that from 1982 from 1984 (the only years that UMM officially raced in the Dakar with it's racing team) ALL cars reached Dakar, beeing one of the teams (if not the only) to do so. UMM were mainly exported to France, Spain, UK and Angola, but some were seen in Zaire (army mainly), Cabo Verde, Germany, Italy (for example, one rare racing version of the Alter), USA, Moçambique, S. Tomé e Príncipe, Guiné-Bissau, Timor-Leste, and many other countries. Check out the Portuguese movie "Julgamento" (Judgement) were an UMM plays a major role in the movie and "Nome de Código: Sintra" (Code-name: Sintra) where it also has a role attempting to destroy on of the characters car on the road (of course the other car was destroyed and the UMM had almost nothing... ). |

| UMM Alter Mona Lisa (1986) | umm fan | Hi... I'm from Portugal. In fact the UMM started to be built in France as Cournil, and them Portugal bought the ideia and started to build those jeeps... and then Alter was a Portugal developement of the Cournil (Alter it´s the model that you see in the foto). Here in Portugal there are a lot of UMM, but most are not an everyday car, and it´s more common to see them in off road events. I have a Cournil and i'm pleased with the car hability to off road... They are superb... very reliable... and very easy, and not expensive to repair if necessary. See this page... http://www.difflock.com/buyersguide/pastmasters/umm/drivingforce.shtml |
