portacker wrote 5 stars! The whole story revolves around this car, its on screen for the last twenty minutes of the movie. Always amazed that the cops were able to tear this car apart so well and then put it back together so it's destruction went unnoticed. Anyone know what It's real curb weight is?

They had four hours, and only took out the carpet, seats, part of the dash and the door panels. All that can be put back in four hours.

No, it was filmed on location.

Detectives tend to have more upscale cars. For example, LAPD used to issue Mercury Montegos to detectives.

leoz wrote So back then were parts of New York complete wastlands with junkheaps like these everywhere?

No. That's just a junkyard, such as you'd find anywhere.

Turns out NYPD doesn't have to pay for damages if they wreck someone's car after commandeering it.

Police in Texas, Minnesota and New Jersey are the only ones required to reimburse someone for damages.
