dsl ![]() | Quote - "I'm often asked about the Aston Martin that was used in the Alfred Hitchcock film, The Birds. The AMOC register tells us that it was a DB2/4 Drophead coupe that was loaned to Universal Studios in 1963 especially for the film. I believe that the car still exists and lives in the US." - http://www.astonmartins.com/feltham/db2_4_drophead_coupe.htm . | Seagrave The Birds (1963) |
ehass@yahoo.com ![]() | This is NOT an Ahrens-Fox! It's a Seagrave Suburbanite or Metropolite, probably one of the many that Los Angeles City Fire Dept. bought in 1923-1924, many of which survive today, such as at http://www.ombac.org/homepage/images/fire_e2.jpg 1. No silver ball on the front, and classic Seagrave centrifugal pump layout under seat (see http://www.ombac.org/homepage/images/fire_e6.jpg) same style and location of pump handles and gauges. 2. Vertically elongated gas tank between seat and hose bed--shorter on an Ahrens-Fox and mounted top front of hose bed. 3. Note rounded hood with two sets of hood louvres separated by gold-leaf numerals inside an oval--just like this Los Angeles Seagrave pumper: Link to "www.lafire.com" On an Ahrens-Fox, the hood is gable shaped (square, pointy) and the hood louvres are continuous across the hood, with no gaps between louvres. 4. Copper chemical tank between seat and hose bed--an Ahrens-Fox would have had a painted booster tank, and like the gas tank, it would have been mounted atop hose bed. 5. Top-mounted booster reel. On an Ahrens-Fox, the reel was in a well cut into the tail step. 6. Sheet metal under hose bed. On an Ahrens-Fox, no sheet metal there, just inverted-V shaped support brackets. If you want to see a real Ahrens-Fox in a movie (a 1922 Model K-S-4 ex-Long Beach, then owned by Glen Alton, who died in 1957), check out the 1951 Bob Hope film "My Favorite Spy". That same Ahrens-Fox now belongs to Richard Stacks of San Francisco, is restored and is one of 4 Ahrens-Foxes on display in Long Beach Fire Museum. The 1951 Hope movie also features a 1914 Seagrave service ladder truck. |

modell ![]() | Don't know why this is 3 stars...it's barely even 2 stars because we don't see anyone get in- it just pulls out of the shot. BTW, it makes me wonder why Mitch chose to use Melanie's small soft-top convertible instead of this. He did say the Aston was faster than the pick-up but did not mention this car. | 2010-07-16 01:55
| 1961 Chrysler Newport The Birds (1963) |
plymouth-guy ![]() | Ha! One year later! I got a better view while watching the film tonight, I can verify it is a four door sedan. No way to tell if its a Newport or Windsor though. | 2010-02-01 03:55

| 1961 Chrysler Newport The Birds (1963) |
plymouth-guy ![]() | It is a four door sedan and it is not a New Yorker (the grille is different). It is either a Newport or Windsor which can only be determined by side moldings and they are not readily visible. | 2009-01-17 21:58

whizard ![]() | This has to be a 1948 model or later. For instance, look at the lights and the seat (visible in the movie), which are both distinctive traits of 1948 and later "Model A"s. | 2008-11-14 05:05

| 1955 Buick Century Four Door Riviera [63] The Birds (1963) |
58Roadmaster ![]() | I totally agree with this as a Century Riviera, model [63] (no "R"). Four-door hardtops of 1955 available only in Special and Century series. As Ray B. said 4 portholes=Century. No four-door Roadmaster Riviera 1955, and A-pillar wing window not consistent with Super/Roadmaster either. | 2008-07-01 10:50
| 1961 Chrysler Newport The Birds (1963) |
58Roadmaster ![]() | This is not a convertible. It appears to be a four door sedan. Agree that it could be a Newport or Windsor; consider changing to unknown model? -- Last edit: 2008-07-01 11:03:53 |

Mad Mac ![]() | Agreed, definitely a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Town Victoria Fordor Sedan, Factory Sand Shell Beige Exterior. In this scene early on in the movie, Mitch Brenner, played by Rod Taylor, pulls away from the San Francisco pet store but not before Melanie Daniels played by Tippi Hedron, makes a note of his license plate number which she uses to track him to Bodega Bay. | 2008-03-01 02:26

| The Birds (1963) |

Super88 ![]() | I know for sure it's a 1961 Falcon. It has a ponted grill. The '60 had a flat grill. My first car was a 1961 Falcon Wagon. From this angle, it even looks like it could be a Ranchero instead of a regular Falcon. Super88 |

| 1951 Cadillac Series 62 Sedan The Birds (1963) |
MrCadillac ![]() | I say it's a Series 62 sedan, not a "60S" (the latter would have visible chevrons on the rear fender). Also the year could be either '51 or '52 (not enough front clip detail to tell). True, the '52 models introduced the "gold" anodized "V" and crest; however, this car is in such poor condition, that "gold" trim could have worn off. | 2006-01-10 01:21
| 1948 John Deere Model A The Birds (1963) | greenbank | This is a John Deere Model A, a late "styled" model with the pressed steel front support. It would be anywhere from a 1946 to a 1952. | 2006-01-02 10:41 | |
