Bordan Ported ![]() | Actually the first factory named Cuda's were 1969 A-body performance models. Plymouth's choice to use Cuda was very similar to Coca-cola switching to Coke or Federal Express changing to Fed-Ex, it was in response to all the consumers calling them Cuda's. The 1968 BO29 Barracuda's are without question Cuda's, at least in my opinion anyway. -- Last edit: 2009-05-19 06:16:33 |

bill dedman ![]() | Funzi159, I own that movie and I can tell you a couple of things, maybe not anything you'd want to include in your Wikipedia article, but interesting, anyway, I think. 1. The car appears to me to be a 1968 Hemi Barracuda clone, for a couple of reasons: To wit: The batteries were mounted in the trunk in the original fifty-odd race cars built by Hurst for Mopar. There is a shot of the movie car wirh the hood up, near the end, and you can see the battery under the hood. Not an original race car, nor even a serious clone. Hemi '68 Barracudas, even the clones, are VERY expensive, and wouldn't be used as a daily driver, even by a doctor (Caviezel.) Original copies go for upards of 200K, even today. The disclaimer the forensic cop reads, that was attached to the door that got knocked off ("This vehicle is intended for supervised acceleration contests and can not be licensed for use on a public highway, etc...") actually was in the glove box, not on the doors of these cars. I thought it was a nice touch, having that read in the movie, but the location of the sticker was not correct. As an aside, I thought the sound quality of the Barracuda's exhaust was outstanding, and totally accurate with regard to what was going on onscreen. So often, it's not.... but a 340 SOUNDS a lot like a Hemi, run through mufflers, and I thoroughly enjoy the audio portion every time the car is onscreen. The sound crew should have gotten nominated for an Oscar for their capture of the sounds of that little Barracuda! As you can probably tell, I was very favorably impressed with the treatment they gave this car in the movie, and yes, it's definitely 5 stars... in the movie a LOT. Caveziel is a high performance car guyl I'll bet he had a lot to do with the filming and sound capturing of this movie.... and, no doubt, had a lot of fun driving those 340 cars; they're pretty fast, Hemi, or no... Good luck with your Wikipedia article; I'll watch for it. Bill |

Knoxzilla ![]() | That was a very very ordinary 340 powered barracuda. They made a few of them since there's a manual (with pistol grip shifter) that was used for interior shots and an automatic as well. They also sold one of them on eBay. It was a standard rental movie car, which means that it looked like in the picture above and was supposed to fill in for a "Trashed 1960's musclecar" in your film. It was even used in Malcom in the Middle as Malcom's first car. | 2007-10-17 20:35

Firebird86 ![]() | In addition, the cars were sold with the understanding they were "Not for use on public roadways" in other words, they were factory racecars. The Darts used seatbelt buckles and straps to raise and lower the door glass, rear quarter glass was fixed in the up position |

incog ![]() | There actually wasn't a "'Cuda" model until the 1970 model year. Prior they were just "Barracuda's". This beast is a 1968 Plymouth Super Stock Hemi Barracuda. In 1968, a special version of the Hemi was built, and put in 50-70 Barracudas, and (if I remember correctly) around 80 Dodge Darts. It was "conservatively" factory rated by Chrysler at 500-hp, while it really made well over 600-hp. In race equip (slicks & proper tuning) it would do the 1/4 mile at 150 miles per hour with an et. of 10.30! The cars were shipped to Hurst who installed the engines and further prepped the cars. | 2007-04-10 05:16
