1930 Ford Model A Sport Coupe
A Day at the Races (1937)
Bob Shetler USIn reply to: CougarTim, On the spare wheel cover, the repair shop mentioned, Clarence Shetler Ford Repairing was my Grandfather's shop. He sold the shop and bought an alfalfa ranch east of Palmdale, California, where I was born and raised. My Grandfather passed away in 1977. I happened upon this page accidentally, by Googling my Grandfather's name to see what was there, and this popped up. What a small world!!!

Rolls-Royce Phantom I Springfield
A Day at the Races (1937)
park-ward FRNever be too sure ... the radiator would make it a pre-1CL series Phantom I if it were an English RR but since the film location is California, I am 99.9% certain it is a Springfield Phantom I (the 0.1% allows for an owner to have upgraded his Springfield Ghost with a box of Phantom I radiator vanes ;o) 2009-08-04 11:36

1933 Buick Victoria
A Day at the Races (1937)
nzcarnerd NZHere we go, I think this one is a series 50 - http://mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=FL0109-77205 - it looks too small to be a big series car. It is a hot rod but the body is stock.
This one - http://www.classicluxurycars.com/photogallery/1933BuickMdl68/IMG_7768_med.JPG - is a series 60. Interesting that it appears to have vent windows in the back. The book 70 Years of Buick states that the Victorias didn't have vent windows at the back. I suspect that the rear windows didn't wind down very far because they would foul the rear fenders. The car in this movie is either a series 60 or an 80.

1933 Buick Victoria
A Day at the Races (1937)
nzcarnerd NZI have looked thorugh many Cadillac pics and this car doesn't match any. I am tending toward thinking it is a 1933 Buick Series 80 Victoria - the last year for this series, it used a 130"wb (the series 90 was on a 138"wb in 1933). I haven't yet found a rear end pic of one to confirm the style with the three hinges. The car on the right that we can see the hood ornament and the chrome headlight of is a 1934-5 big series Buick. 2009-02-27 20:03

A Day at the Races (1937)
pilou BECompared to the other cars ,this one looks big.It may be a 1934 or 1935 Cadikkac V8 Town Coupe on the 128 inch chassis.Appears bigger than Oldsmobile or Buick. 2009-02-25 17:08
1929 Plymouth
A Day at the Races (1937)
nzcarnerd NZI just had another look at this one. The bumpers are wrong for 1929 Plymouth. It might be a DeSoto. Back later after checking. Isn't it amazing how quickly two years goes by.

1930 Ford Model A Sport Coupe
A Day at the Races (1937)
CougarTim USThe spare wheel cover appears to be from Clarence [initial] Shetler Ford Repairing, located at 70 W Green St.

I can't find any specific references to such a repair shop, but I can find census records of a Clarence E. Shetler who lived in Los Angeles in 1930.

70 W Green St. in Pasadena, California, is currently the address of Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Dining.

nzcarnerd NZIn the middle of the picture is a 1930 Ford Model A Sport Coupe. I don't think that top actually folds down. On the right might be the 1933 Chev roadster seen crashed in another pic. Maybe a 1936 Chev hood ornament on the left?? 2009-02-23 18:54

Animatronixx DEThis kind of bodywork was pretty outdated in 1927... For I love "A day at the races" and rate it one of my favourite Marx Brothers movies, I desperately tried to find out who could have been responsible for that body, but... I still have no idea. 2008-01-08 00:55

pilou wrote The headlight bracket of the Moon/Windsor was curved ,on this car it is straight .Fenders of the Moons/ Windsors were rounder and flatter .Also the bumpers were different. The nearest I can come by here is a 1928 Hupmobile Eight 4.3 litre 100 hp. Grille pattern, straight headlight bracket, boxed fender lines and bumper match, there is a rectangular grille logo and the grille slightly downcurves under that logo. There is a central rib in the sunvisor, all typical of the big Hups.

Presque d'accord à 100%, mais je pense plutôt à une Huppmobile 1929 series C

pilou BEThis is indeed a tenth series Packard Phaeton 1933 on the 142 inch wheelbase chassis .It could be the twelve , model 1005 ,or super eight , model 1004 ( both built january 1933 to august 1933).About the only external difference was that the head- , tail- and parking lights of the twelve had a raised chrome rib.The picture here cannot allow for differentiation 2007-02-24 15:01

DynaMike NLI agree with Packard. But in 1934, their front fenders came further down towards the bumper. This must be a 1933 (shorter front end of the fender, but yet the vertical part of it on the sides). 2007-02-24 00:39
