| 1915 Daimler Y-Type 30hp 3-Ton 'Subsidy' Truck Downhill (1927) |
Sunbar ![]() | Edit: 1915 Daimler 30hp Y-Type 3-Ton 'Subsidy' Truck as here Data shown as the original auction source is likely to disappear with time: Link to "www.christies.com" "Prior to the Great War Daimler lorries of various sizes from 2 to 5 tons load capacity were made and with the outbreak of hostilities these were in considerable demand for all manner of purposes from straightforward troop transport to fully-equipped mobile workshops. In March 1915 an unexpected Government request for 50 lorries to be supplied within the week for, as it later transpired, the Gallipoli campaign was successfully met by twenty-four hour working at the Coventry factory. The Y-Type differed from its predecessors of identical load and engine capacity in that it had a full pressed-steel chassis whereas earlier models utilised a wood and flitch-plate frame. Fletcher's Commercial Motor Index lists the Y-type Daimler only for 1916 and 1917 but since one of the plates on this surviving lorry bears an October 1915 date it is safe to assume that production started before the end of the year." The size and proportions of the radiator on the Daimler D-type bus based WWI vehicles appear to be wider compared to the truck shown here and in the link http://ccmv.aecsouthall.co.uk/p565484992/h8cb21a#h8cb21a There also appears to be a difference in the front axle shape for buses and trucks although this could have been an earlier or later design change. In addition to Leyland Thornycroft and other British truck makers, Daimler also made 'Subsidy' trucks the majority being to the WWI 3-ton specification for the war department. I believe this is an actual 3-ton Subsidy truck. -- Last edit: 2012-07-31 12:04:10 |

| AEC NS-Type Downhill (1927) |
johnfromStaffs ![]() | Both types would have been on the streets in 1926/7, in roughly equal numbers, as far as the open toppers were concerned, so if you can see the half bay with the route number stencil above, NS it is. | 2012-07-30 09:04 | |

| AEC NS-Type Downhill (1927) |
Sunbar ![]() | AEC NS-Type or S-type I believe by the side window layout. The short glass in the centre and at the far end are just visible (both apply to the NS-Type and S-type but unsure if the NS short front glass is there or not also the lower floor height is not seen. |
