 The main reason, why it never happened could have been IMHO the panic of the VEB Sachsenring about High-Tech-spionage and blueprint-hunters...

Or did it have a different name in South Africa? The Wikipedia article suggests that it was simply the Cortina bakkie.

ingo DESure, the Mercedes Benz-spare-parts-service is very good - and available everywhere on the world. Even in North Korea (I'm just reading a book, written by the former responsible manager of Kim Jong Il, who fugeed in 1993 and was living since then the whole time incognito in Vienna...)

Ford P100
Blood and Oil (2010)
ingo DEFor me it looks more than a Taunus/Cortina indeed, due the front lamps and the whole shape and size. But you can see, that it's heavily repaired after some crashes. No part fits the the next ones.

As Gomselmash writes, it looks like a Pick-up, too. And a Taunus/Cortina-Pick Up was built in ZA.

Mercedes-Benz [W123]
Blood and Oil (2010)
Gag Halfrunt UKIt's in South Africa, where Mercedes has a factory. I dare say that buying the correct parts, as opposed to grabbing bits from a scrapyard, would be expensive, but it's surely possible. 2010-05-10 20:14
Mercedes-Benz [W123]
Blood and Oil (2010)
ingo DEYou cannot say, that it's a 280 E. It has the 280-lamps, but the bumpers of the lower trim-lines - so a non-original combination. It can be any W 123, it was just repaired during the years and after some crashes with parts, which were available in that moments. Not to forget, it's in Africa... 2010-05-10 20:08
1978 Chevrolet Rekord
Blood and Oil (2010)
ingo DEIt doesn't count, if it's built in ZA, Brazil, Germany or anywhere else, the US-flag is definetely wrong, as it's for sure a Rekord E-derivate (maybe the only "derivate"-parts is the logo...). 2010-05-10 20:04

cl82 DEI'm sorry, but I'm rather convinced it's a Cortina instead. Note the panel underneath the bumper, for example. The Granadas "front spoiler" didn't have any openings, as far as I can remember. Apart from that, it simply is not wide enough. 2010-05-09 22:41

1987 Fiat Uno 1a serie
Blood and Oil (2010)
Citsa ZAThe Uno was introduced in ZA some way into the life of this model, 1987 IIRC, and the first ones were imported before assembly started at the Nissan plant north of Pretoria. If this is LHD, it will most likely not have been built here - the rear trim (apart from the missing bumper) does also not look right; might be a very early import. 2010-05-09 22:37
1978 Chevrolet Rekord
Blood and Oil (2010)
Gag Halfrunt UKThey used the rusty Citroen DS and the three door Fiat Uno (both as taxis) precisely because there were so few left hand drive cars available.

cibup ESToo many left hand drive cars to be filmed in South Africa, not? So I don't know, maybe a South American Chevrolet badged version of the Opel Rekord, but also strange. But for sure not USA model origin, because it's an Chevrolet badged Opel Rekord, so German model origin.

Gag Halfrunt UK@cibup: The fact that this car is left hand drive means that it was not made for the South African domestic market. That's why this car is a bit of a mystery. 2010-05-09 21:57
1978 Chevrolet Rekord
Blood and Oil (2010)
cibup ES"In South Africa the model was sold as a Chevrolet until 1982, when it was rebadged as an Opel. Delta Motor Corporation, which bought out GM's South African subsidiary after it divested from the country in 1986, produced EII model until the early 1990s. Later South African Rekords featured the Opel badge above the grille, similar to the smaller Kadett." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Rekord
So, Chevrolet Rekord 1978+ origin Germany, built in South Africa, like that ones: /vehicles.php?make=Chevrolet&model=Rekord&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on
