tore-40 NOChecking and re-checking again does give a start of 1961 model at October 1 1960, chassis 3 335 848 if you should ever find a chassis number. So yes, the indicators were added to the last batch of the 1960 model, leaving the subject vehicle a 1960 should then be correct. 2018-02-11 15:42

dsl SXAll drivers would have had to present car registration papers at scrutineering to confirm the car as road legal, production-based, and fully registered - it's part of what makes a rally different from a road race (eg Mille Miglia). Registration in countries of origin eg Carlsson's SAAB perfectly acceptable if the paperwork is provided - if Sweden allowed sticker plates, Erik could use them. Not sure what would happen if sticker plates were not allowed in Sweden, so road legal here but not there.

Yes - that's the tax disc up by the mirror.

tore-40 NO@dsl; Set late November 1960, it's not too early for a 1961 model. The trafficators would be just a shadow (of doubt). Colour would be the L456 Ruby Red available for 1961-67 Typ1. Seems like a UK car, with the single mirror for a RHD vehicle? Sadly the (partial) registration is unreadable.

On the other hand, the L451 Indian Red available to the Typ1 1960 only, is a closer match. If so, then the indicators would be added by the owner?

@dsl; Your Glass's would list any changes, if your market had indicators before the autumn of 1960 (like in the US), it would surely be mentioned here?

tore-40 NOSo this is a 'random' sticker, while Carlsson's SAAB is an official registration, even a foreign one? (For the brick design, remember that bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly)

What about the sticker in the upper part of the windshield?

dsl SXSticker plates were allowed and fashionable as racier and more streamlined (although a bit incongruous on the brick-like Volvo). They died out in 1970s when reflective plates arrived.

It may well be a tribute to his dad's old number plate or whatever, but would have been properly registered. Vehicles could only display one registration. My only doubt here is that I don't see a tax disc, but it might be in the side window. Not sure what that thing in bottom right of windscreen is, but not a tax disc.

dsl SX@tore-40. Thanks for that link. I had it in the back of my mind that UK PV544s were LHD to start, possibly becoming RHD later. Glass's lists PV544 as sold here Oct 58 to Oct 65, becoming just 544 in Aug 61. No mention of LHD or RHD anywhere, including preceding PV444 (Oct 56+), so I ignored the little voice. But as they were all always LHD as your link, they'd be rare beasts here. And I'll tell the little voice that it wasn't quite right for next time.

For the plate, in 1960, big rallies (RAC, Monte, Alpine etc) were still gentleman's tours as much as competitive events so had driving tests and concours d'elegance add-ons to the racey bits. So quirky registrations were desirable, along with picnic hampers and whatever else would get bonus points. If anyone needed a short-term plate, RAC (and AA) had access to separately reserved series for foreign/temporary visitors, so would not (re-)use old plates issued way back.

tore-40 NOBut most buses and even the trams were RHD, with the passenger doors to the left. They were modified or scrapped Dagen H.

There are other LHD vehicles present, like Rosqvist's PV, Carlsson's 96 (these have Swedish plates) or one ID.

@dsl; They made no RHD cars for your market, it seems. Could this be a special rally registration? Maybe a temporary registration, or for foreign vehicles? I remember we had special rules for farm tractors and for rally cars in Norway, they were not allowed on the public roads and wore special number plates.

No info found for where they finished. If they did. 110 AYM was London July 60 to July 61, "allocated in blocks". Series II Estate, one of the last before SIII with 4 headlights arrived in Sept 60.
