It is the Toyota MegaCruiser, early military version.

The vehicle on the right behind the soldier must be a Type 73 Small Utility Vehicle.

Edit: It is a Mitsubishi and called 'Kogata' (hope that is a real name and not Japanese for 'light truck' :) Jun, you must help, please.).

Model for JGSDF are named 'kou kidousya'(=HMV / high mobility vehicle), nickname is 'Hayate'.

'96-, based on Mitsubishi Pajero and they are officially named 1/2 ton truck.

The Megacruiser name is only for the civilian model. The military version appears to be called the High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) in English or Kohkidousya in Japanese.
