Not 96? |

It depends on the years (would have been too easy if they used "96" for all the 96 ) |

But they did... This is just another 96. -- Last edit: 2006-08-07 14:19:05 |

If this is a plain car, should be 1967 model year due to federally mandate backup light. |

This one proves to complicated to determine precisely when looking at it again. Starting with the colour it can be 1965-67. The body has got the small windows, also available as 1965-67 models and in the US as budget version called Shrike also in 1968 with an engine downsized below 50 cubic inches to be able to pass the limit for emission control. Shrike was available 1967-68 in the US. Problem with this car is that it has been stripped of it´s trim. Even the cheapest Shrike had trim on the fenders, as did the 1966 SAAB Special a version with the Monte Carlo engine and less trim and equipment sold only in the US and Switzerland. The Monte Carlo 850 and regular US SAAB V4 Sedan had the double chrome stripes over the doors. If the rear side wndows of the Shrike model were fixed or possible to open I don´t know, it could have been available as option. So after what I can find this one could be: 1965 SAAB Sedan or Monte Carlo 850 1966 SAAB Sedan, Special or Monte Carlo 850 1967 SAAB Sedan, Shrike, (Monte Carlo 850, not sure if they sold in the US as 67 models) or V4 Sedan All Monte Carlo 850 should have the backup lights and when the V4 came it was given the same equipment/trim as the Monte Carlo 850 for the US-market. But if it was mandatory for 1967, and I have no reason to doubt that, they would have been on all the others to which makes it more probable that the car here is in fact a 1967 since sales inceased a lot with the V4 engine. My guess is that it´s a V4 Sedan but it´s not possible to be sure so let´s keep it as it is now, 1967 SAAB Sedan [96] |

DAF555 is correct. When US government got in the wind of the pollution control, they started mandatory pollution control in 1968. They continue to tighten the pollution control until late 1970's. Perhap they have phased out the Monte Carlo 850 in 1968 in favor more powerful V4 engine and beside they reduced the engine displacement to 816 cc to bypass the pollution control. In this case, this car is made for USA as I stated above due to federally mandate backup light. -- Last edit: 2007-08-05 20:05:39 (antp) |
