This scene was a reenactment of the murder of security guard, Gerald Smith who was shot multiple times by Neilson at the former Dudley Freightliner Terminal in Dudley, West Midlands on the night of the 15th January 1975. The investigation into the kidnapping and murder later revealed that after kidnapping Lesley Whittle, Neilson planned to used the terminal as the final location of the ransom drop, but was disturbed by Smith. Neilson then pulled out a gun and shot Smith six times in back, wounding Smith. Six days later on the 22nd January, Neilson's car, a green Austin 1300, bearing registration number, TTV 454H was discovered by a police constable in a car park, about 150 yards from the terminal. A check of the vehicle had shown that car's number plates didn't match the registration number on the vehicle's tax disc on the windshield, a further police check of the Austin, revealed that the vehicle was stolen. In the car, the detectives found Lesley's slippers, a cassette player with a tape of Lesley's voice telling her family to co-operate with the kidnapper, unused Dymotape, and a box of cartridges that matched the spent rounds used in Smith's shooting and the sub postmasters' murders. While in hospital, Smith had managed to provide a description of the shooter to the detectives, the description was enough for detectives to create a photofit of the shooter. Smith later died of his injuries in hospital in March 1976, as Neilson was already on trial for his crimes, he wasn't charged for Smith's murder. -- Last edit: 2023-06-26 15:12:18 |
