Launched in 83 in Mk3 forms as plain version based on 1300 GL Escort, progressed thru 1.4 upgrade, then in 84 added 1.6 as 1.6L (plain version) and 1.6 Leisure with trim and bits from the ZA XR3i. Then in 85 cloned twins were added for the MMI Rustler (MMI being the ZA joint venture for Mitsubishi and Mazda) as 130 (1.3) and 160 (1.6). All change in 86 - ZA didn't take the Mk4 Escort, instead switching to the Mazda 323-based Laser, except for the Bantam which became the only ZA Mk4 derivative with new front and other Mk4 updates - 3 versions offered - 1400, 1600 and 1600 Leisure. MMI Rustler renamed Mazda Rustler and had same 3 trims as 1400, 1600 and 1600 LX. Oct 92 the Bantam Nite edition added, with the zoomy wheels and colour matched bodykit seen here. A year later they all stopped, and a new pickup replaced them with Mazda 323 front joined to the Bantam rear. A new Fiesta-based Bantam popped up in 2002, keeping the Bantam name alive until 2011. Nothing mentioned about Bantams being exported. so intriguing that one should emerge in Norway. There was however a Pick-up made for Benelux, cut down from a high-roof van, so it had a distinctive tall top over the cabin which looks weird. Only available in plain poverty trim as 1.3 petrol and 1.8 diesel.
