I Think the "S-Class" denomination only started to be used from the W126 models. But then I may be seriously wrong...

In that case, I think the correct name should be W109.

It's not so easy...

The "first" time the S class principles (in term of development, building methods, equipment ... ) was applied, it was for the the W128. She wasn't named S Class, but at DaimlerChrysler, it more or less recognized (and by the customers too) as the first S Class.

After that, the W108/W109 got to market, not officially named "S Class" but included in the "S Class" books. This was the beginning af the S/SE/SEL abreviations...
The W116 was the first official "S Class" on the market.
The W126 was the first which was named S xxx

So, as you can see, which one was the first S Class ???? :)

We take care of each comment posted. But we are a very small team and unfortunatly not always available.

Sometimes, it take a few hours (or days :D ) to see the comments but we read them ;)

Indeed this is a tricky question. I´ve been wondering about the origin of the S in Mercedes models and mostly about it´s use on the 170 S model which was a larger body for the same slow 1767 cc engine in the 170 V. Does anyone out there know if the V and the S in these cases were shorts for something and ,if so, what? It´s not connected with the engine anyway.

In the case of the W128 I think it´s like this, they first came as 220 and 220 S, the S simply stood for twin carburettors at this time. After that they put the single carb engine in the 190 body and called it 219 for a few years until the fintails came and this combination of body and engine once again was called 220, without the S.
In this context the S seems to be connected with engine, and it was only available in the largest bodies.

Over the years Mercedes began to put the twin carbs and injection engines even in the compact bodies to meet market demands, but it would have been confusing to have the 280 S availabe with two different bodies so they just called it 280 in the compact series.
And by this time, early 70:s, the time was right to officially introduce the S-class.

Since then we have received a whole bunch of classes from M-B, soon they have covered the whole alphabet... :)

Another fake number plate. B at the start of the number means August 1984–July 1985.
