Not an AEC Matador but a Thornycroft Nubian. |

Who made the body for this crash tender conversion? It is not a Nubian DP1: but certainly older and based on the Nubian truck: -- Last edit: 2007-06-26 12:53:16 |

Fifty RAF Thornycroft Nubian 3 Ton 4x4 GS Trucks were converted into Nubian 4x4 Foam Crash Tenders (Mk.5?) in the years 1951 to 1953. However who carried out the conversions is not recorded on the RAF details of registration and from the data is is likely they were carried out under a number of separate contracts. |

The above Thornycroft has a Pryene body and has Pyrene stopped building this type of appliance in 1952 and the lack of a RAF roundel on the front of the vehicle or any RAF markings at all, make this likely to be a civil avaiation vehicle. The equipment lockers fitted either side of the radiator are a Pyrene feature and were fitted on crash tenders like the one above, and were also a feature of Pyrenes first crash tender it built,on a Bedford QL chassis,Pyrene later became known has Chubb |
