4 SMY seems to have been a significant DB4, possibly a works development car but details very difficult to establish; a Sept 58 Middlesex plate which would match the Feltham factory at the time. It was entered in 1962 Monte Carlo rally, #36 as "Aston Martin DB4 GT", registration 4 SMY driven by Sims/Stephens, finished 62nd, but did not have GT faired-in headlights - http://rallyemontecarlo1962.unblog.fr/ - seems both SMTS (white metal) and Altaya (die-cast) have done 1:43 models of the 62 Monte livery. |

Chassis no 1 Silver/Black was registered 4TMC [DB4/101/R]. There is a mid 60s B&W picture of a car wearing 4TMC which looks to be cream coloured, however the car was restored in 1980 and back to silver. It was for sale by a Dutch dealer in 2013 for £2.6 million. DB4/102L,103L, 104L, 105L & 106L I have read elsewhere were LHD demonstration cars for overseas markets . 4SMU [DB4/107/R] was a Wedgewood Blue/Cream factory development car, restored in 2006. (It was re-registered YJR968 in the mid 60s when a period owner robbed the registration for his Alfa Romeo. Its now on a Smart car of all things according to DVLA!). WLC433 [DB4/108/R] was the third consecutive RHD car in Dark Blue/Beige. Only the first three RHD cars were listed as having PP pre-production engines. 4SMY looks a light metallic/light interior in your photo, and should have been one of the very next few RHD chassis numbers. One of the pictures of it being used in the 1962 Monte shows it as light blue metallic, but the picture was hand tinted. According to an Aston Martin Owners Club document dated 1973 the subsequent chassis numbers for RHD Series one DB4s still known to the club at that time were 111R,115R,116R,118R,123R, 125R, 126R, 129R, 130R, 146R, 147R, 148R, 149R, 150R, 151R, 153R, 154R, 157R, 170R, 171R, 176R, 178R, & 179R . Frustratingly the registration 4SMY was not attached to any of these known cars as of 1973. As chassis 116R (painted Elusive blue/grey and sold to film director Raplh Thomas) was registered WXR100 in 1959, that should mean 4SMY was a chassis number preceding that, but which one? 111R, 115R or a RHD missing from the list? Or was prototype 108R I'm also pretty sure whilst looking in the past few days I have seen a period photograph of the plate 4SMY on a silver looking DB4 but with overriders (unless its the same car pictured above with retrofitted bumpers). Please add to this thread if your research has found anything else. Isn't it frustrating being a nerd? -- Last edit: 2020-01-24 03:15:03 |

Check out this Monte Carlo 1962 rally footage 8 mins in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w85OYcGHpNM and at 28.44 when its pointed out the Lyndon Sims DB4 posted the best grand prix special stage time (but I have read elsewhere it was piloted by Ralph Stokes...?) -- Last edit: 2020-01-24 03:07:48 |
