From Tintin and the Picaros - this was a late 1940s Chevy truck. |

Sorry for the super-small picture, but here's the original, stated to be a 1951 3800: http://dardel.info/tintin/vignettes/_Picaros27.jpg -- Last edit: 2015-11-17 21:06:40 |

Any link to this identification? Apparently a 1947-55 Chevrolet Advanced-Design truck indeed. This is a really ugly drawing when compared to the one made by Hergé, and it doesn't give details except the 1947-53 grille and split windshield and the (really badly drawn) 1951+ vent window. I'll assume that this "thing" is said to be the same as the truck drawn in the comic album, so I'll use details visible in this latter: • dual rear wheels, so as 1951-53 model any truck above the 1-ton 3800 (which had this configuration only as option, unlike the heavy-duty models); • the wheelbase seems to be the 137"/3.48 m one (but impossible to be sure), shared by the 3800 and the heavy-duty models (1½-ton 4100 and 2-ton 6100); • depending on the drawing (it appears more or less clearly 6 times in the album), the hood seems alternatively to be the high one of a light/medium-duty model or the flatter one of the heavy-duty trucks; • the visible rear wheel rim is clearly the one of a heavy-duty model); • the bumper looks like the one of a light/medium-duty model, meaning a 3800 here. • while viewing General Alcazar driving, one can see (2 times) the shift lever of the column-shifted 3-speed transmission. But this configuration was not available for the 3800 nor for the heavy-duty versions of this truck line (they only had the floor-shifted 4-speed transmission)... I don't see any other detail in the album nor in the main pic of this page which could help to say more. For me, there are too many contradictory details to identify a particular model. ⇒ 1951 Chevrolet Advance-Design _____ I know that Hergé worked a lot on details since The Blue Lotus, but he had obviously his limits. Like all human beings ![]() This said, the number of accurate details about this truck line in his drawings, even if some are irrelevant or contradictory, is just amazing. -- Last edit: 2016-01-25 08:47:20 |
