| ◊ 2015-10-15 22:36 | The side reflexes might indeed be indicative of a 1968 or so MY, but the wheels are not. 1963-66 230 SL and 1967 250 SL had wheels (sometimes) painted in the body colour (but otherwise in the same colour as the soft or hard top) and with a small centre hubcap and a large chromed wheel embellisher http://www.conceptcarz.com/images/Mercedes-Benz/64-MB_230SL_DV-11-GC_001.jpg . 1968-71 280 SL had all black wheels with a hubcap covering the whole wheel, albeit it was partly painted in the same colour as the car Link to "www.classicdriver.com" . |
| ◊ 2015-10-15 22:49 | I'm not worried if this switches to early 230 SL - this one is not a disagreement about how to date them, but a question of what we think we can see. So I think it's 280 SL cover, but don't mind being wrong. However am intrigued by from /vehicle_97612-Mercedes-Benz-280-SL-W113-1968.html |

But after having ventilated the matter with someone with greater knowledge on older Mercedes this summer I believe I can put some light into it. Up until the late 60's there were a number of manufacturers of door mirrors, like Desmo, Tex, Albert and Talbot to mention but a few, some supplied as optional extras by respective car manufacturer and some supplied by several different retailers. Some where supplied in only one country and some on a wider basis. The next problem concerns safety on a wider perspective, not only concerning people inside the car. Sharp objects could protrude and cause serious damage on people passing by. Hence did some countries forbid firmly attached door mirrors and only allowed spring supported mirrors which could easily bend away when hitting a human. Comes 1968 and Mercedes supplies a safety door mirror, and it becames the most widely spread. Some examples of Mercedes door mirrors: 1968-72: Link to "lh6.googleusercontent.com" . One that sometimes is refferred to as the 'swan neck' Link to "image.jimcdn.com" . Another one sometimes used on the Pagoda: Link to "image.jimcdn.com" . -- Last edit: 2015-10-16 22:01:21 |
