According to this page, it's dressed as a 1964 model.

'New Look' model for sure, but as 1969 suburban bus, why not a S6H-4503 (without air conditioning), a S6M-4503 (manual transmission), a S6M-4503A (manual transmission and air conditioning), a S8H-5303A (53 passengers instead of 45 and a different diesel engine) or a S8M-5303A?

Because Westours 205-212 are model S6H4503A. Everything except the transmission is obvious from the photos on the linked page: It's a Suburban (has luggage doors), it's 35 feet long and 96 inches wide (4503) and has air conditioning (A). All 35 foot New Looks has six cylinder engines.

Should also add it's a 1969 GMC S6H4503A Skyview.

This had been updated. Why did it change back to just 'New Look'?

No idea... I guess someone else is less trusting you than me :D

I did, but had to leave quickly before I could write any explanation or question, sorry.

It's not a matter of trust, for me, but of understanding. As I don't have your bus knowledge, I'd like to understand the "obvious" thinks you describe, mp775:
• how can you see the air conditioning?
• what are the specific hints to tell a 35 ft./10.7 m long (4503) model vs. a 40 ft./12.2 m long (5303) one? Given the viewpoints, the difference is not that obvious, for me...
• what means Skyview?

This said, even if a 4503, and even if with air conditioning, you said there is no way to tell an automatic S6H-4503A (apparently 31 models built) over a manual S6M-4503A (29 buses built). Why should it be an automatic version?

The air conditioning unit is the hump at the back of the roofline, visible in this photo - Link to "images.glaciermedia.ca"

You can tell it's 96 inches wide by the fact that the vent to the left of the GMC emblem on the front of the bus is practically touching the emblem; on a 102" wide bus there is more space between the two. Six standee windows instead of seven makes it 35 feet long, and the luggage doors make it a Suburban (NOT the lack of a rear door; there were single door transits). The skylights make it a Skyview.

Now the transmission. There may be way of telling from the outside or by looking at the driver's cockpit, but I don't know what it is. What I do know is rosters. We know it was delivered new as #208 and operated as one of eight in Skagway. The S6M4503As delivered new in 1969 went to Texas, California, Puerto Rico, the Grand Canyon, Pennsylvania, Iran, and South Carolina - http://www.omot.org/roster/GMList/s6m453a.html. The S6H4503As went to Seattle, Kent State, Sacramento, and New Orleans - http://www.omot.org/roster/GMList/s6h453a.html. No Alaksa... except the units that went to Seattle were numbered 205 to 212: eight of them, including the two here. I happen to have known that Westours was the operator for Princess cruise shuttles in Skagway and Ketchikan, but even not knowing that going in, it doesn't take much deductive reasoning to say our bus is a S6H4503A.

With all due respect, if you know someone knows more than you do on a subject, you might want to trust their knowledge a bit more.

Ok, I asked you to share a small part of your knowledge so each willing IMCDb contributor and visitor can now better identify some New Look buses. What a sacrilege! :D

In my world, trust and respect can only be earned, they're not due. Your explanation is a small step forward for trust concerning this bus. But your last sentence won't help if you're waiting for some kind of "due respect" from me :)

So is this to be renamed then?

I read in mp775's 1st link that:
Quote In 2005, his now-defunct Vancouver tour company bought the bus that's now in Pouce Coupe from Gray Line.
[...]It was our 212, it was Gray Line's 212. It's always had the same number.

As there is no reference to Westours in the article, couldn't it be one of the 2 S6M4503A buses bought by Gray Line Tours Inc, a company also based in Seattle and being also a division of Princess Cruises?
I'm aware that this would imply at least a small mistake in the linked article: as both buses were apparently delivered in June 1968, this one would be a 1968 model. Or the mistake could be about the company, as it bought only 2 buses, not 8. And their fleet numbers are different, according to mp775's links...

So Gray Line S6M 4503 A or Westours S6H 4503 A? For me, the debate is still open :)

The phrase means the respect is due to you.

No, it isn't one of the two 1968 Gray Line buses. The article says 208 and 212 were among a fleet of eight buses. Westours 205-212 is a fleet of eight buses including 208 and 212. Gray Line 1818-1819 isn't. Minimal Googling reveals that Westours was bought out by Holland America in 1971 - Link to "www.prnewswire.com" There's the Gray Line connection.

I could post every single identifying characteristic in every ID, but 1) I don't have time to write a dissertation on every ID; 2) it would get extremely repetitive; and 3) much of that information is already available in the forum.

Well, I acknowledge that a great part of the Rest of the world is convinced for good, now, and re-establish the ID. Thanks, mp775.

@ mp775: answering to questions asked by persons who don't understand things you see as obvious can also be seen as a kind of respect ;)
I put back the Skyview complement, but what are "skylights"?
_____

Edit:
By the way, I also added the
'New Look' info as complement so this bus can be found when someone search for this kind of bus...

Skylights are windows in the roof.

IMO, in general, "New Look" should be the model with the alphanumeric model designation as a submodel or trim level, but I'm not going to mess with convention.

eLMeR MH

2015-10-01 04:53

Thanks for the explanation about the skylights. I think that the "convention" about the 'New Look' complement was set like some others, i.e. because someone wrote it that way at the very beginning and everybody did the same after :)
It could certainly be changed if another order appears to be more accurate.
