Yeah, but how many police departments actually have those in their fleets?

Well, that's a fiction movie and the car is not a Plymouth or a Dodge... There were not many Pontiac police cars either in real life but in this movie, there were plenty of them! Telly Savalas drove Buick police cars in Kojak and Jack Lord had Mercurys in Hawaii 5-0! Not something we are used to see either! But there was a police package available on some Buick models!

Anyway, this one IS a 1972 Chrysler Newport!

I don't know how common the 1972 Chrysler was in police car fleets, or if a police car package was even offered on a 1972 Newport. However, a lot of these little towns often didn't have the budget to buy a real police car, so often they'd just buy a used civilian car and turn it into a police car. Most Mopar police cars from that time were probably Plymouths and Dodges, but I guess it's possible that the Newport was offered as a police package. I know the 1979-81 Newport was offered as a police car.

The 1976-77 Pontiac LeMans was also offered as a police package, called the Enforcer. They weren't very common though, because back then Mopar pretty much owned the midsized police car market with the Monaco/Fury. Pontiac's 455 was pretty watered-down in 1976, and the biggest engine you could get in a LeMans for 1977 was a 400 (403 in California), but you could still get some pretty high-output 440's in the Mopar squad cars. Also, the downsized 1977 Impala pretty much made the LeMans obsolete. Pontiac offered a Catalina police package in the late 70's cars, and it was pretty quick with the 400, as the Catalina was lighter than the LeMans had been.

The Buick LeSabre was also offered as a police car for a brief time. At least, the Michigan State police had one in their annual test around 1979 or 1980.

Probably a civvie car bought cheap (back of used car lot, junkyard, etc)and made up to look like a police car in order to wreck it?
