WillyBiggs ◊ 2016-05-13 22:50	I haven't been able to find any conclusive documentation on this, but I suspect Mike Ehrmantraut chose this car as his daily driver because it's predecessors, (the '80 and '81 LeBarons) and sisters/counterparts' (The Plymouth Gran Fury and Dodge Dipolmat) were all used by the Philadelphia Police Department during his time there as a beat cop. In the "Cobbler" episode of Better Call Saul, Mike makes reference to the car having sentimental value during an estimate for reupholstery. Although this was an excuse to negotiate with Nacho, the son of the shop owner, I believe there may have been some truth in the statement. Likely because they were poorly designed and were prone to frequent breakdowns. I owned an '86 Gran Fury that had been meticulously maintained and the car would not run with any degree of reliability. Total junk and terrible gas mileage due to it's brick-like body.

I've also had the same year/model car as well. An Ex-Grapevine,Tx police car. Car was actually reliable (It only quit on me once,and I was in sight of the parts house I was going to anyway?? Coil blew.) but yes,these cars had some real issues? Namely with the electronics,that 'Lean Burn' system was junk!!! Car never ran right in the rain or damp weather....until I ditched all that garbage!!! Also these have a lot of front end issues,the K-Frames are prone to cracking. Design was revised (reinforced) in IIRC '87,I later replaced mine with an '87 unit I pulled off a junked Diplomat ex-police car turned taxi??

Personally I think the stuff they made in the 1960's is way more ugly, the M-Body Chryslers are just boring
Misterdgc ◊ 2020-04-01 07:08	I think the Chrysler 5th avenue is one of the sharpest looking cars of the 1980s malaise era cars. It is a solid squared off sharp edged rear wheel drive sedan that is big but not a boat. It was (at the time) the last rear wheel drive Mopar ever to be produced (later Daimler/chrysler made a Mercedes Mopar rear drive car). The M body was (kinda) a last gasp of the legendary B body platform. The M body also included the heavy duty police Diplomat / Gran fury twins. All of that good cop stuff bolts right onto the fifth Ave! Swap a cop geared 8 and a quarter inch rear axle (with the sweet rear sway bar setup included) for the light duty highway geared fifth Ave rear axle and acceleration is actually pretty good! The drivetrain is the rock solid 318 smallblock & Torqueflite combination. The Leanburn ignition system gives this car very good economy for it's size. The Leanburn ecm is easy to replace if it starts getting erratic. The lean burn system is usually blamed for other maintenance related problems or issues (I toasted 2 ecms before I realized that the voltage regulator was running the charging system 3 volts too high!! Be sure you have a good ground strap from motor to frame also). Styling-wise I believe the bulbous fake wire wheel covers are what makes this car look like a grampa ("Pop Pop's") car. The fifth Ave actually comes with fairly wide wheels. Pry off those ghastly wheel covers, add some cop (dogdish style) hubcaps and maybe trim rings, and you have a really cool looking Mopar! The Fifth Ave M body (the rear wheel drive version) will never be a super collectable Mopar, but in my opinion it will gain increasing respect as time goes on! -- Last edit: 2020-04-01 07:48:35
