Was ist L ? Leipzig ?

 Only since 1990! Between 1977 and 1979 it was issued for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahn,_Hesse and afterwards until 1990 for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahn-Dill-Kreis

It was a kind of political scandal back then (more in the German Wiki-article), because the "L" was reserved for Leipzig already in the 50ies, when the new German plate-system was released. Because back then, it was a general political position in West-Germany, that sooner or later there will come the German re-unification - but according the 1937-borderlines. So in the 50ies there was already a list of license-plate-combinations for all former German districts, so for the whole DDR and also for those, which became Polish or Russian after 1945: Link to "de.wikipedia.org"

This topic was the reason for the existence of the "Holy Grail" for plate collectors (which me accidentally digged out :D ): http://www.kennzeichenwelt.de/index.php?page=brd-stade

Thank you for your detailed comment. You really know a lot of things and I have to say that I almost always agree with your comments (I recently and casually watched on TV a famous movie in which a Mercedes W111 convertible is destroyed and I totally agree with your old comment).
I didn't know the fact that L was reserved since the 50s but maybe the same wa the caes for Dresden (DD).
Ciao

The same could be the case for CDI (or CDTI, TCDI or whatever) reverting to Diesel
