Is this EKV 881 - 1939 Daimler DS18 Drophead Coupé 2 door bodied by Carlton, chassis 49531??![]() "Twenty-three DB18 Drophead Coupés were planned for 1939, but production stopped when war broke out, resuming in 1945 until 1953, however the factory was demolished during the Blitz of 1940 after only eight chassis were built. Five were destroyed during the attack, leaving only three cars with this the only surviving example. Based in West London, the Carlton Carriage Company was founded in 1924. Their design team was noted for their 1930s drophead designs, in addition to coupe-de-ville, continental tourer, sport saloon and 2-seater sports roadster designs. Some have an art deco flair, whilst others have elements from US styles of the period, possibly due to connections with American manufacturers and clientele. Chassis 49531 was bodied by Carlton as a Drophead Coupe, but retained by Daimler for use from 1940 to 1950 for various special occasions. It was loaned to Winston Churchill for his political campaigns in 1944 and 1949. The Daimler was fitted with a load speaker system, and Churchill sat on the rear deck to address the crowds as he was driven through various cities. The DB18 was deemed appropriate as the relatively compact size of the car gave crowds a good view of him. More recently, it has had much restoration work by Eberhard Thiesen of Hamburg, costing €140,000. Established for over 40 years, Thiesen are one of Europe’s most prestigious classic car dealers and restorers. The DB18 is now two-tone black over silver, with an Art Deco inspired green leather interior." from http://www.coys.co.uk/cars/1939-daimler-ds18-drophead-coupe-by-carlton |

Look at the mouldings or swages running down the bonnet corners from screen to radiator, also windscreen shape with rounded lower corners and squared top corners. Looks very similar to thumb, I wouldn't argue even though the reg. no isn't visible. -- Last edit: 2016-06-29 14:58:33 |
