It's the original Steinwinter from 1983 ! It didn't seem to have a proper model name.

2040 is the actual model name, even though it's hardly used. Not very original, but I promise at some time in the future this name will sound totally modern - wait for it! Some sources also mention the "Supercargo" suffix, but I guess that's more of a subsequent nickname, just like they later started calling it "Cab Under" for reasons we all can't imagine.

Time went by, Manfred G. Steinwinter unfortunately passed away in 2018, the website linked above has disappeared and the new official website now frequently uses the Cab-Under name! The owners of all the rights to the Steinwinter truck even announced a book with the full story, including how major German investors and partners were pretty much the opposite of helpful for the project. As it seems, the book hasn't been released yet - probably because some of the former partners weren't very happy about it... (my speculation!)

The 20.40. prototype still exists in Schwäbisch Gmünd-Bettringen, Germany, and the owner prefers to remain unknown.

"Our partner, the company Drögmöller Omnibuswerk Heilbronn, is responsible for the production of the carrier and towing vehicles. Our partner, the company Schmitz Fahrzeugbau, Altenberge, takes over the production of all possible superstructures and trailers. In the aggregate sector, our partner is the company Daimler-Benz with their proven products and extensive service network."
