1972.

It should be a '71, as it's mentioned often on the show.

It really is a 1972. The 1971 model has a different grille with horizontal bars, different bumpers without rubber impact strips and different taillights with an horizontal divider (this car lacks it) The trunk door of the 1971 has louvers for the ventilation and this one also lacks them. The side mouldings that were standard on the '72 were not available on the 1971.

stronghold wrote This car is used alot throughout the series (..but in this particular eps 1.03 ..it is shown only very briefly.!)..I think it's better to wait for a better 'main' picture of it.

Hecubus wrote Should we just use the picture (/vehicle_7282-Buick-Riviera-1971.html) from the second run of the series for now, given that it is the same car and all (or, mostly the same, two were blown up, to be replaced by identical Rivieras). BTW, even if we don't use that picture, might as well make this a '71.

philr wrote It's a 1972 Riviera, not a 1971.

Cycolac Fan wrote Apparently it is a 1972 Riveria that was sometimes referred to as a different year, such as a 1971, by the characters,

officially there were three cars but having watched the stunts the cars went through on the show and the need for stunt vehicles, nice shiny ones and doubles I wouldn't be surprised to find they went through 20 or more during the series.
Pictures exist of three together on set though.

In the pilot episode Ray drives a late 60s or early 70s black stacked headlight Mercedes coupe, probably a 300SE with later model 5 spoke alloys.

The series was made 10 years ago. There 1972-made cars were rather junk than untouchable classics. As 1982' cars today.

Well, they were about as inexpensive to buy as they are today... But in 1990, there was already a feature on the 1971-73 Rivieras in Collectible Automobile (the first issue I have bought at a grocery store when I was 13!) and while it wasn't a high value car, it was already a special interest car that turned heads and had decent performance for a full size car. Most cars of 1982 will never be like those of 1972... In 1982, many cars (including the Riviera) had switched to FWD and they had poor performance and not too distinctive styling. A friend of mine could tell you about as he used to have a Riviera from the early eighties and he still has a 1972 Riviera GS which is a whole different car.

Sandie wrote Three stars. Only appears in the first episode of this spin off where it is destroyed for the last time.

It did appear in many Due South episodes and was seen often (in car chases too).

And here it is, listed as a '71 again...

After the show went off the air I saw one of the Rivieras used in the series at a movie car company located just north of Toronto. I considered offering to purchase it but it was in such rough shape the restoration would have been cost prohibitive.

Why?

intensive use during Seasons 1 to 3 , some plot points were revaulving around this car , like it being stolen or destroyed and then repaired or replaced with an identical one...

The kind of thing that occurs in a lot of series/movies, 4-star seems enough for that.

mike962 DE

at least the eps number should be 1.*

Episode number is the one of the picture. There are comments to indicate in what other episodes it appears.
