Production commenced Autumn 1935, ie after the summer shutdown. 10,000 cars had been produced by January 1936. About as far from "Magnificent" as anything could be. |

I would not dare to be ironic about dsl's favourite Rootes cars. How they had the nerve to call it "magnificent" beats me, a depressing heap with big rust problems and an underwhelming specification that was definitely more show than go. |

I'll defend the ones from periods when I was alive, but it's more difficult for those from earlier decades because they're too far away for me to really know whether they were any good. And I have to admit that calling any porridge car Magnificent is stretching credibility a bit. But - like the Skoda Superb - it's a memorable name, so maybe achieved its purpose .... |

My Uncle Arthur of late memory had one in the 1950s, it caught fire! Plenty of them were sold, but it was the 1932 design, clothed in a new Pressed Steel Co body. The one car of this era from Rootes that really seemed good was the Super Snipe, with that big engine in a lightweight body it was very fast for the time. |
