Hm. Although hood/fenders seems to be post-'73,in interior shot we can see pre-'73 dash. ?

Sure, but since this is in Oz, it is a RHD conversion. Down under they might have retained the old dashboard design.

Yes, they use it to pull a tanker, but on the scene pictured above Max starts the abandonned truck that he found on the road to bring it back to the refinery to connect the trailer to it.

Why didn't they use "Coolpower" in the U.S.? Actually, it's a fitting name, because Mack trucks are cool & powerful.

OK, just to set the record straight a bit here, a "coolpower" was called that because it was the first to use an air to air intercooler, rather than an air to water aftercooler, or as in most early Macks, no charge air cooling at all. Secondly, Twin stacks and Twin air filters means diddly squat as to what's hiding under the bonnet. The coolpower and maxidyne engines had an air filter just for the intercooler air flow so the intercooler stayed clean, as this was a "box" type mounted on top of the engine, cooled by a little turbine driven by bleed air from the main pressurized engine charge air, which drew air through the left hand air filter and blew it through the intercooler. And most trucks in Australia had twin stacks on the exhaust until later years when 6 inch plus diameter exhaust tube became common. Plus it looks cooler.

Nightrider,

Maxitorque is Mack's gearbox line-up and doesn't have anything to do with engines! Coolpower is an engine range, as is the CCRS, Econodyne, Thermodyne and Maxidyne!

this is a 1979 mack R600 because it only has two head lights on the front, from 1982 onwards they had 4 head lights and cause the truck cab is early 1970's cause up till about 1979 they used the old style roof clearance lamps. and it a quad box gearbox which was only used from i think 1975 ish to 1980 so yeah.

Only Mack engines were available in the R600 series. They were inline 6 turbocharged engines that ranged from 237hp to 350hp. They were around 673-676 cubic inches displacement.

So possible names for it are
R685
R686
R612

the transmision is at most a 10 speed due to the fact that it has 2 shift levers AKA a Twin Stick MACK, also if you listen closely to the film you will hear that the truck has an air powered starter wich is a very rare item to see in trucks due to unreliability of start up on the first try

It was actually a standard factory fit item to Australian Macks - unlike America where you got electric start standard and had to pay for air start, it was the other way around for us! We had air start standard with electric start optional!

Nightrider,

It has a CoolPower 320 tip-turbine turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine with air start, a single stick gearbox (don't quote me on model - I believe it could be the triple countershaft MaxiTorque 12 speed), Mack 38,000lb diffs and a camelback suspension!

This Mack is actually a R686ST - more information on the Coolpower engine here:

A Coolpower has an aftercooler mounted to the side of the cylinder head, and uses a tip turbine fan to boost and ram air over this aftercooler. It uses 2 air cleaners (COE) or one (conventional/bonnetted) and sometimes had vertical bar shutters to open and shut in front of the radiator to maintain proper temperature.

It had to have 2 air filters (COE models) or two lines from the single air filter (bonnetted/conventional) to feed the aftercooler fresh clean air!

The Mack being a steel dash is pre 76 ,In 1975 the plastic dash was introduced in Australia (1973 in the USA)
In 1975 there were still some steel dash cabs being sold as 75 model just the last left overs ,1976 all were plastic from then on
its a coolpower the right aircleaner with it duel pipe going into the bonnet is the giveaway to it being a tip turbine setup

the engine could have been any of these hp ratings 237,285,300,315,350 HP

so my guess 1973 to 1975 ,its definitely 73 onwards not before, mack changed the cab at the back so there was more legroom in 1973
in one of the links nightrider put up of wrecked truck i can see the cab with a deeper back ,you can compare it with a google search of a r600 flinstone cab

Edit.. heres the guy that did the stunt in the mack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1EUQegif2Y
