johnfromstaffs ◊ 2014-03-07 20:13	Austin 1800 Mark 1. 1967/68 Mk 2 not until May 1968. IMO, this was one of the best cars produced by the British motor industry at the time. We had three in succession, all bought when about 2 years old, an Austin Mk I, a Wolseley 18/85S Mk 2 and a Morris Mk 3. They were all comfortable, reliable and easy to drive, the Mk 3 being the best in terms of general use. However, they suffered from BMC/BL's couldn't give a damn attitude to marketing and detail design, and lost out to inferior products like the big Fords of the time which were neither as roomy or as fuel efficient. They were a brilliant towcar, we used to move five grown-ups, a child and a 16 foot Sprite Major trailer caravan with no trouble at all. -- Last edit: 2014-03-07 20:38:53
dsl ◊ 2014-03-07 22:31	I remember two families having 1800s when we were kids - huge back seat space for loads of us on holidays, and one family in particular used it as you did for towing caravan everywhere. But he got bored with it and went for a Renault 16 which he always said was his favourite and a better towcar.

We tried to do the "shift the family and tow the Sprite" with the Renault and the back suspension went down so low that it was nearly undrivable, and I got rid of the Renault shortly before the rust did, and bought a Granada estate.
