Becaue all cars in France had yellow headlights until 1993 (or most of them; white is mandatory for new cars since 1993 but I am not sure that yellow was mandatory up to 1993). One of the ideas is that it was made after the war (WW1) to make a difference between French and German cars, if I remember well. Yellow is less dazzling, but it lights up less too. In Belgium it is said that French people needed less dazzling lights because their headlights were never correctly adjusted

Many japanese car had Yellow anti fog light for this reason.
bref ◊ 2006-11-13 20:45	For the same power, the lighting intensity is 26500 candela/m2 for the white and only 15000 candela/m2 for the yellow. But it so fun to drive from to time with yellow light on. Everything seems so diferent. It was not permitted to use White up to 1993, but now it is possible to keep your yellow light

Alexander ◊ 2008-02-07 13:04	Goddag, Per! These headlights are known as 'selective yellow' and were compulsory in France until 1993. Some other countries allowed yellow headlights, but today EU regulations demand white lights. In some countries yellow fog-lights are still permitted. You probably will be able to get yellow lights second hand in France, but I guess this will make your car illegal in Denmark. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_yellow
DynaMike ◊ 2008-02-07 13:20	I don't know for Denmark, but in Holland it is no problem to have yellow lights on older cars, even though new cars were always delivered with white bulbs. Of course we've got yellow lights on the Panhard, Dauphine and 2CV. Car specs stay allowed as they were on the date of production (so also the Panhard doesn't have indicators on the front, only on the sides and the rear). Only exeption on this in Holland: the single foglight of the Panhard cannot be used anymore.

DynaMike ◊ 2008-02-07 13:50	It's also forbidden to have foglights and normal headlights at the same time. Foglights may be used only in combination with the small patkinglights.
CarChasesFanatic ◊ 2008-02-07 13:52	Yes, but still being parking lights they are turned on, so the centre foglamp wont ever be turn on on its own, the others will be as well
