Were the Aussie ones really built in ZA? -- Last edit: 2019-02-28 18:13:11 |

It seems that all E46 variants in Australia were sourced from *both* South Africa and Germany. The only way to tell is by checking the VIN. -- Last edit: 2021-02-24 05:33:42 |

ZA was global RHD production centre at turn of century for churning out many German mainstream models - BMW 3 and 5, Merc C-Class and maybe E-Class, some Audis, etc. Always the high volume lines in the standard or base versions - more exotic/lower volume versions still came from D. Therefore ZA was actually the main source of German-for-UK motorway fodder for a long time. This was an unrecognised element in the Brexit debate here - lots of rabid Brexiteers claiming that we Brits had good cards to play because the German carmakers would pressure Merkel into ensuring that UK market was still wide open for them. But it was a busted flush - they could just increase the supply from ZA instead ... |
