These GMCs were pretty much the only vehicles used as ambulances in Australia from 1996-2003. Prior to 1995, the Ford F-Series was used, but it was discontinued in Australia, leaving this vehicle the only option. When production of this generation ended, Mercedes Sprinters started to replace them, although these GMCs were still in use up until around 2007. In Victoria, they usually had black bonnets (hoods), but this one is a NSW ambulance. I would estimate this ambulance to be a 1998-1999 model due to having the newer blue and red style lightbar on the roof. 1996-1997 GMC ambulances had all-red lights in NSW (but not in VIC). -- Last edit: 2019-12-09 04:46:39 |

Looking at comments elsewhere it can be as late as 1998 (the 1999 Sierra was a new generation). In such cases when there is a range of possible years we use the first possible year of that range to list the vehicle with. Unless, of course, it is one of those situations where there is a really long year range that isn't much use. |

After further research, I found out these ambulances were introduced in 1996 in NSW (as well as Victoria). Petrol engines were used from 1996-1997, and diesels beginning in 1998. Not built in Aus. Only the conversion to an ambulance is done in Aus - the vehicle itself is from the US. -- Last edit: 2017-12-12 13:58:27 |

This is the way we list coach built vehicles right now, this is to identify the origin of the coach builder. I don't know if antp have a better solution for this in the new version of the site. |
