According to wikipedia the next version of the car was in 1984 and the A-reg began in 1983 which would make this an 1983 car (unless it actually is the fifth generation Galant). It also says that in UK between 1983 and 84 it was called the Mitsubishi Sigma.

It can be from 1983 or 1984. From Wikipedia :

From 1982 to 1983, some of the Australian Sigmas were exported to the United Kingdom with the Lonsdale badge, circumventing the voluntary 11 percent market restriction adopted by Japanese manufacturers. The car was unsuccessful. For its final year, 1983 to 1984, it carried Mitsubishi Sigma badges in the UK before meeting its demise.

Yes - it's the Aus-made Mitsubishi imported briefly when Thatcher put quotas on Japanese imports (as^^^). Named after the Adelaide suburb where Mitsubishi had the factory, but AFAIK the brand was only invented for this UK effort to avoid any mention of anything Japanese. Model names were simply YD41 (saloon) and YD45 (estate), each imported in 1.6, 2.0 and 2.6 engined versions. Some threads with ads and info at Link to "oldjapanesecar.proboards.com" and http://motoscat.freeforhosting.com/lonsdale-thread-t19.html . The 2.6 was a 4 cylinder, therefore one of the biggest modern engines with that configuration.

Probably not driven by the clientele, which prefers the same-named clothing for political reasons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonsdale_%28clothing%29
