You can't rely on the sound, it is too often dubbed by something else... However the badge is seen here: 280 SEL 4.5 then |

I live in Arizona, and believe me, I don't think I have ever seen a license plate matching that number, any further information to pull up about it? |

Norma Bates' car in the series. I am not a Mercedes Benz expert...but if this is a 280 SEL, I think it'd have to at least be a 1968 model...don't think they made them in 1966. Also, is that color Reseda Green? |

If you can trust wiki on this one you have a 1972 based on the 4.5 engine. |

Cool...thanks for the info! |

In some of the episodes, this car sounds almost like it has a diesel engine. I'm guessing they did overdub it, since the W108 was never available with a diesel engine. |

This car has a column-shift automatic, and in some of the interior shots it appears to have an aftermarket stereo CD player. Also, Arizona only requires one (rear) plate. |

I completely agree with Thepattoncar. I'm an european & used to diesel engines ( & Mercedes). This car never had a diesel engine ( it's not a taxi) but an extremely elaborated v8. From where this sound comes? Overdubbing? transformation? I know that it was usual in Texas to turn citroen CX Turbo's gearbox into an automatic ZF box. So, why not? But, to turn a nice w108 v8 into a common diesel smells... i try to keep cool.. ANyway, I vote for overdubbing ( sound engineer is fired) ' cause the exhaust does not release black smoke. Try that if interested https://youtu.be/5C321bPC_Ro |

Sorry but wiki is wrong on this one. This is not a 280. It is a early 1970's Diesel W114 or W115. In the show you can clearly hear a 4cyl diesel. Not sure what displacement it is. They offered 3 or more diesel 4 cylinders. I had a 1970 W115 with a 2.2l Diesel and my engine sounded exactly like the car in the show. The 280 was a V8 model. Big difference in the sound of a 4cyl Diesel and a V8. |

This car was sold here: https://auction.screenbid.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/73/lot/49009/ VIN Number: 2BG90513X12015747 |
◊ 2018-03-12 01:18 |
...That 2BG*** VIN was assigned by British Columbia, not the original Mercedes number, so of little use. Except we know the car comes from Canada. |

1973 stated in the link above, should it be changed? |
◊ 2018-03-13 01:42 |
Yes. There's no real technical description, other than "It runs shaky but with some work it will drive", so the amount you're supposed to bid is a gamble. New owner seems to be Joe D. Robinett, Winnemucca, NV. |

Hi there, I just came across this thread... I'm the actual owner of the Bates car (Joe Robinett) I purchased the car during the Screen bid auction in early 2017.. As far as the details pertaining to the car itself... I can tell you that there was a total of 3 cars used to portray Norma's Mercedes.. The first car was a (1972 SEL 4.5) It was the only one they had for the first season...however, it proved to be unreliable... so a second car was purchased for season two.. which was a (1973 SE 4.5).. which is the car I now own..it became the primary (Hero car) for the remainder of the series. A third car was purchased during season 4..it was also a (1973 SE 4.5).. but it was used very sparingly and did not see much screen time.. The season one car (1972 SEL 4.5) was also used for certain stunt scenes such as when you see the car run through a fence and when Norma hits a big road sign showing damage to the car... If you pay attention to the badge on the back of the car, you will notice it changes from scene to scene.. it will say SE in one shot..and then SEL in another. The #2 car, which is the one I purchased, saw the most screen time throughout the series.. it can be seen 85% of the time.. As far as the sound of the engine you hear.. a diesel sound was added in post production..and is not what the car really sounds like.. all three cars were 4.5 gas engines.. my only guess is, they just wanted to give the car more character by making it sound like a diesel.. But I can tell you it is not. Also, the color of the car, is not a factory color at all.. the color green that you see was chosen by the production company to fit the look they wanted.. The original color of the car I have is actually white (before they painted it) I have been trying to find the auto body shop who painted the cars to get the color name and code so that I have it... but have been unsuccessful so far.. I hope this clears up any questions you may have about the car.. All the best Joe |

I was the technician who did all the body work on this car and its "sister" cars. The first time it was in for a visual repairs. Like dents, rust, and paint issues. Second time, was the sister car that got a complete colour swap to match the first car. The third time, not sure which car it was, but it showed up with damage from falling equipment. Other cars that I worked on for the show was the Chryslar 300 that was color swapped white to become a police car. The shop you were looking for is Cosmos Autocare. They are now under a different name. Same owners, same place at 1343 Adnac street in Vancouver BC. links included to my instagram account with recent pictures uploaded of the vehicles i had taken many years ago: https://www.instagram.com/p/CBeLuiaBJ8p/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link |
