Why so? Do they have something against Beetles? In the Philippines, VW is making a comeback but VWs are associated with the old ones :D

In 1970s Hong Kong had a lot of VW Beetles on the road. Later because of introduction of Japanese cars, Hong Kong people had started to think that: the specification of VW Beetles is backward.
In some Hong Kong movies, VW Beetles are used as comedies, to be sneered by Hong Kong people.
This one is an example: /vehicle_517119-Volkswagen-1303-Typ-1-1974.html

In this movie, when the owner of sportscar saw VW Beetle, said: "This is a car? Poor~~~ :( "
The owners of VW Beetle were angry, and replied: " This is a real sportscar! We can have a car race now."
The sportscar owner: Haha  , how your car can be faster than mine?
The Beetle owners: Now, if you don't believe, bet now, $300.
The sportscar owner: ok, let's go.

I know VW Beetles are frequently collected in western world, regarded as a symbol of culture,
but very few Hong Kong people think so and do so......

So when I had my 2009 visit there (Hong Kong) Volkswagens are rare!

But there is an Volkswagen fan club (as nearly everywhere on the world): http://www.vwownerclub.org/forum/index.php
From there I got the confirmation, that no existing K 70 are known there any more.

Maybe in Hongkong was it similar with Volkswagen as for example in Japan and New Zealand. Over there VWs had been always rare, because they were very high priced import cars, much more expensive than similar local or regional produced cars.

The main reason is the lifestyle.
Hong Kong people basically follow the Japanese one, in every aspects.
For example, many Hong Kong people like collecting Japanese Yens.
Why? It's because the Japanese Yens can be used for buying Japanese goods! :D
Also Hong Kong people like the comic "Initial D" (/movie_385426-Inisharu-D.html),
so something like Nissan Skyline, Toyota Corolla, Honda Integra, Mitsubishi Lancer, are very popular among Hong Kong people.

Actually Japan is not very distant to Hong Kong, and many Hong Kong people know to say Japanese.
The Japanese cars are RHD, similar to Hong Kong.
These makes easy for Hong Kong people to find car accessories from Japan.

Some car models which only sold in Japan are common in Hong Kong, such as Nissan Cube, Toyota Porte, Toyota Ractis, Toyota Sienta, Honda Stepwgn......etc.

For VW, after 1980s, because of the competition of Japanese cars, only VW Golf are common. :D (/vehicle.php?id=606860)
VW can only use VW Golf to maintain its market share of Hong Kong!
