I don't agree. It's well a 1969 Mercury Cougar Convertible, with a Ram Air induction hood scoop added as option. Possible engines: V8 351 c.i. 290 hp, V8 428 c.i. 335 hp, V8 427 c.i. 390 hp, and a 302 c.i. with the "Eliminator" package (definetely not present on the red Cougar driven by Diana Rigg in this Bond film). |

I know the lady that ones this vehicle, and I have a red cougar xr7 conv with red leather seats to, this car is located in the middle south of Sweden. And it is running and in really good condition, oct 2005. The engine is a 428cc and it is one out of three in the movie, but one of them is in england on a yankyard. -- Last edit: 2005-11-25 02:07:24 |

I've always thought this car looked very good - the red colour + Ford rally wheels, etc. It all 'worked' for me at least.. Very nice. ![]() |

Cougar69...can you give more info on where this car is now and how it got there?? |

It was an R code 428 Cobra Jet (335 HP conservatively rated, more like 360-370 HP) with Ram-Air. 428 CJ Q codes (non RA) in 1969 didn't get the hood scoop (except Eliminators...they all had that hood scoop) 1 of 96: 69 XR-7 convertible/R code/C6 automatic. |

A friend of my fathers owns one of the 3 remaining Cougars used in this film. In the UK we have a log book which is the original bill of sale for a car. He has this with the car and it states on there that the car was used in the film. My father has lost touch with him so I dont know how he is going with the restoration. He also owns a 69 mustang fastback. |

so if one of the Cougars is in England and one in Sweden, (which is apparently for sale) what happened to the third? |

The bond Cougar(428 cj)that was in sweden is owned by ian flemings organisation now, the bought the car last year from the girl in sweden, i talked to the organisation because i have some parts from that car. I have documents know that tells me i have the parts from that vehicle, and i am glad i could keep it in my cougar (red conv with red leather interior). I really would like to go and see the car in the museum they have. they have restored it and all the bond stuff is back on the car. Ron, sweden |

Magazine article (Classics and Sportcar, June 2025) has a feature. They say EON Productions ordered 3 identical Candy Apple Red XR-7 428 Cobra Jet Convertibles (from only 127 made with this engine. All were delivered to England, 2 early on during 1968 for filming, including the ice-rink scene, with one of this pair partly stripped to use as a camera rig, partly to film cockpit close-ups of Diana Rigg (so Rigg's rig?? ![]() Then in 1969 EON realised they'd need a third one so ordered chassis R549292 on 30 Jan 69, which was UK registered HKX 367G, mainly used for the barn scenes at Pinewood Studios and filming in Portugal. This stayed in England after being sold off, was well-known in the East London/Essex hot-rod/drag race fraternity until the 90s, but became a bit of a bodged banger, changing hands several times until bought as a semi-derelict for £1500. At one point it lost its original 428 which blew up, and replaced by a 390 which was fitted with the 428 heads. Full resto followed, including a proper full spec replacement 428 - and it became the Bonham's 2020 auction car as above - £310,000 or £356,500 incl premium - apparently the highest price ever paid for a Cougar. Now lives in Switzerland, still wears HKX 367G plates and is a live UK registration with current road tax. Both the 68 cars are also described as happily surviving, but no info given. |
