With that grille logo, it's a 1982 at the oldest.

Were these actually sold in Germany? (or the UK, where I'm guessing this deck scene was probably filmed)?

The car park interiors were shot at the Brent Cross shopping centre in north London.

Nearly everything is available, but mainly not through Ford-dealers itself, mostly through importeurs.

Heavy duty US recovery trucks like this are fairly rare in UK, but a few are used for lorry recovery, motorway standby fleets and for racetrack coverage. Another source may be vehicles sold off from US miltary bases/facilities in UK.

Shall it be from a Volks...wagen garage? /vehicle_18790-Audi-80-Typ-81-1978.html

This wold be extreme unlikely. I've seen one time a Brazilian built VW-tow-truck in use by a VW-dealer in Wolfsburg, but this is more expectable that a product of annother brand.

Over here it's similar, as dsl says about the UK. A few US-made tow-trucks like that above -some bigger ones are running here, too- are in use here, also mainly for truck-recovery companies. Recently I saw a newer F 350 tow-truck around here. For those goes the same, as robi has pointed out (the same as for all kind of US-made Fords): they aren't available officially at Ford Germany, but on special order of a willing Ford-dealer or a private imorter, you can get them.

Thumbs 2 & 3 are from the chase's extended version.
