A few questions:
Was it possible to hear the sound of a Diesel?
If so, it can still be a petrol engine as most sound effects is added afterwards.
Was the Diesel version common, at the time, among the military?

It might also be a 230 [W143] as here http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Datei:230W143.jpg or a 320 [W142] as here http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Datei:320W142.jpg .

How can it be possible to tell an exact year? Can it be read on the number plate? If so, is it trustworthy?
The [W138] was made 1936-40.
The [W142] was made 1937-42.
The [W143] was made 1937-41.

Hi zodiac, have been concerned about question 230 or 260 D resp. W138 W142 W143
as you have listed systematically above, thank you for that!
There is one detail, the steel trunk, i only could find at a 260 D yet,
in fact this detail prevented me from thinking of these series,
although it is surely a Mercedes by one glance at it.
as dsl would say:
it smells like it.

one aspect you have mentioned:
In fact command or staff cars fleet has been absolute exotic hotchpotch, consisting of requisitioned cars
of all makes ,
Mercedes has been the exception and with Diesel quite uncommen.

No, there were always other noices at the same time heard, such as from the truck, the bikes and a loud speaker's voice.

About the trunk:

In early days of owning a car one always take for granted that all the aspects of a car is made from one manufaturer. Unfortunately that cannot be true in these days as a car is far too complicated to be made in other ways than in a "collection" of parts from different subtractors.
The only car, that I know of, that was (almost) solely made by one manufaturer was the Ford model T, where Ford owned the mines where the metals originated, the glass works, forrests from wheree the base of the body was made, big farms with cows from where he got the hides, and I believe he even owned some oil refinery. But they almost got bankrupted when he tried to own the rubber production as well.
But having said that I was surprised when I found a brouchure for an optional extra; a (just one) shock absorber...

The trunk was, I'm sure, made by one of several body manufacturer. Perhaps, but not for sure, possible to order as an optional extra. Not only on the 260D, but on all models.

It's 320 Lang [W142]. There's one detail confirms that -> the position of dent in footstep, for jack.
