One much used by the Terminator, and others used as normal police cars.

In some scenes, the car's appearance alters between a Monaco, and a '78 Plymouth Fury :D

I would think the LAPD would have something newer.

This was in the chase between the Caddilac. I love how Arnold just Smokes the tires on the Monaco, with little effort.

When did the LAPD stop using Monaco's?

Ford_Guy US

2010-08-19 00:42

The LAPD never used the Monaco but instead used the 1977-1978 Plymouth Fury twin. These are all just movie cars, and Murf32's comment points out some of the errors.

Exactly. It seems unrealistic that they would be using cars that are over 6 years old.

They're movie cars. Movie police cars are always older as they're mostly always old police cars. If you look today, you still see a lot of old Crown Victorias/Impalas being used as police cars in movies and TV shows. And additionally, it is not unrealistic at all for the LAPD or other police departments to have cars that are six years or older. They still have a substantial fleet of 1996-1997 Crown Victorias for that matter.

Also, Terminator movie wasn't very high on budget. And in sequel they use more "realistic" Caprices...

actualy, they started using monacos in 1974, when the monaco became a b-body

My comment was in specific reference to the 1977-1978 models. But either way you are incorrect as the LAPD used Plymouths, not Dodges.

In Trailer Parks Boys, in one of the episodes around 2006 or 2007, one the police cruisers is a fuselage styled Caprice. The rest are Crown Vics.

The last year for the Monaco's at the LAPD was in 1982, by then, The Dodge St. Regis, Plymouth Gran Fury, chevy Impala and the Ford LTD Crown Victoria were the main police cars of the LAPD

i just rewatched the Terminator movie and picked up a new goof, so i've added it to the list at IMDB.

At the start of the car chase with the blue caddy, the Terminator pulls up and we see the slogan on the door "to care and to protect" (car 1874). When the terminator crashes at the end of the chase, we see the slogan is now "Dedicated to serve" (still car 1874). The logo is also different (missing the 'METROPOLITAN POLICE' words).
(see pictures above snap144.1 and snap161.2)

Why does it say: "To care and to protect" instead of "To serve and to protect" on the side? :??:

Did these Monaco/Fury squad cars use 340s?

somename US

2013-06-13 04:28

^The 340 was gone after 1973. Though they more likely then not used 360s.

Skid US

2013-10-12 16:30

Possibly, though the 440 was available through 1978, and the ease with which this one smoked its tires might suggest a big block.

^ or the classic m Hollywood trick, the tires were soaked in petrol to slip easy (even in underpowered car) and produce smoke

The Fury should have its own page. It appears that the Monaco was primarily used. However, for the final portion of the chase that was filmed on Lower Grand Avenue, the Fury seems to have been the main car.
