Yes, according to the police report, at about 3:30 PM on the day of his death, James Dean was pulled over by California Highway Patrol officer, Otie Hunter after being clocked doing 65mph (105km/h) in a 55mph (89km/h) zone on California Highway 99 near Mettler Station at Wheeler Ridge, just south of Bakersfield, California.

James Dean's friend and stunt driver, Bill Hickman (remembered for his stunt driving in Bullitt, Diamonds Are Forever, The French Connection and Seven-Ups) who had been following Dean in a Ford Country Squire station wagon with the Porsche's trailer was also pulled over.

Dean received a ticket for doing 10 miles over speed limit while Hickman received a ticket for doing 20 miles over the speed limit as he was driving a vehicle that was towing a trailer and the speed limit for vehicles towing trailers at the time was 45mph (72km/h).

After receiving the citations, both Dean and Hickman turn left onto California State Route 166 and then onto California State Route 33 (known as Racer's Road as it was a known shortcut for race car drivers and sport cars) to avoid going through Bakersfield's downtown district as the speed limit for the downtown district was 25mph (or 40km/h) which took Dean and Hickman to Blackwells Corner on the eastern section of US Route 466 (later renamed California State Route 46).

At his 90th birthday on the 8th April 2015, Hunter received a framed copy of the ticket issued to Dean with the words, "Voided, Deceased" written after Dean's death as the citation instructed Dean to appear in court in Lamont, California to answer the charges of speeding on the 17th October 1955.
