The last digit stands for the wheelbase and is just a sub-classification within the J10 group. Available models were HZJ105, HDJ100, HDJ101, FZJ100, and FZJ105. |

Personally, I consider all the digits for designating Toyota chassis codes. Example : the bB (aka Scion xB) had three versions of chassis code : CP30, CP31 and CP35. So I prefer to have CP30 rather than CP3 as a general code name. That's just me, of course, but I feel I'm right, especially when I see people - and official Toyota litterature ! - referring to a certain Land Cruiser as a 120-series, rather than a 12-series. -- Last edit: 2006-11-13 00:13:22 |

We discussed this subject a while ago to avoid imprecise chassis codes. The full model code looks like this (example for a J7): But it would be absolutely impossible to provide such a code for the vehicles listed here. The first bit of the code consists of four parts: - 1 or 2 letters for the engine (diesel: L,KZ,KD,B,PZ,H,HZ,HD - petrol: R,RZ,VZ,B,F,FZ,UZ)) - J for off-road car - digit for the model (started with 2 and goes up to 12 (11 was omitted)) - digit for the type within a model category (the higher the number, the longer the wheelbase (except for J12: '0' is LWB, '5' is SWB)) For very few cars we have listed it is possible to give the exact code with engine and wheelbase. But for most cars this is not possible. To keep them together we decided to use J plus model digit as the chassis code only, which is common among Land Cruiser aficionados. |

Sure, but Exiv96 said that J100 is more common to mean "J10something" than just using J10... So if it is used like that by most of the people, why not use that rather than another convention? |

Who says it is? It messes up the classification. If you use 'J100' for the general model, but it is e.g. a FZJ105 (and identifyable as such), you will trigger quite a lot of comments and you would have to explain that 'J100' means 'J10something' and stands for all 'J10' model vehicles. Doesn't make sense, does it? |

I own a Land Cruiser, but I couldn’t care less if chassis codes were included in the identification. That would be the last thing on my mind. I mean they would be precise, but wouldn’t that be a little to much work to have to incorporate all chassis codes? |

The Land Cruiser like I have (which is the same thing as in the picture above) is considered the UZJ100w version. The Diesel Land Cruisers’ are know as the HDJ101k versions. I don’t know if this helps, some of you probably already knew that anyway… |

Toyota says it like that. Thay refer to the various Land Cruisers as "80-series" for the J80, "90-series" for the J90, "100-series" for the J100, etc. I mean, would they call it a "100-series" if the code was J10 ?
